This. At best they where strong, and it was mostly due to physical labor not training.

Yes, they trained, but more on the use of weapons and fight techinique than other thing.

gladiators ate almost exclusively carbs, they were actually pretty overweight typically. More of like a strongman physique or like an NFL lineman / rugby player

as for natives, african tribesmen, those types, its the combination of genetics and constant physical exertion. Its no question they're higher T, and they move all day every day laboring in the sun. Wouldn't be surprised if their bodies were better adapted to nutrient partitioning considering it never had to filter out the nonsense in goyslop

The myths of subsistence and persistance hunting are just that - myths.
Before most megafauna had died out and before Africa had turned into a miserable desert, ancient people mass-hunted large animals.
They often used landscaping techniques to kill them via geography, driving them off of cliffs or depending on them being trampled.
They hunted way more than they needed and they certainly didn't run for hours.
There is a very interesting book about it, but I don't remember the title. If you search for landscaping/hunter-gatherers and the origins of agriculture, you might be able to find it on Amazon, though.
The modern manifestation of those people is one of starvation phenotypes.
Constant running actually lowers your testosterone, as does nutrient deficiency, which you are bound to run into, if you live off of bread.
And while gladiators at a plant-heavy diet (beans, barley and other starchy crops), they also ate a very significant quantity of meat, dairy and seafood.
          https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0110489
Now the old Egyptians, they are a different story. Almost all of them ate primarily grain. This wasn't even socially stratified. Even the pharaohs lived off of grain.
Do you know what it gave them?
Heart disease. And this is ironically something we can determine today based on their texts and mummies.

    >fantasy movies with steroid users are a true depiction of ancient peoples

    Yew naw.

The Unsullied from Game of Thrones resemble what ancient warriors would have looked like. There is archaeological evidence to support this, such as armor/chest sizes found.

In other words, around 160lbs lean, at 5'9".

      Anonymous

Unsullied are described as smaller and weaker than the average man in the books, their advantage comes comes from their discipline, formations and skill from years of training

Except in real life, castration opera singers actually grow unusually large due to lack of testosterone that slows growth after puberty

        Cecelia Drakensang In Seattle

Yeah, I kinda knew this might come up.

While they are described as smaller than average men, due to having the snippy, say compared to someone from the North who is used to tough weather and has a meat based diet, it's still a fantasy setting. And what I mean is, they are still a good representation of how ancient warriors in reality would have looked.

Because of course all the actors work out, and do have testosterone, they are just not roided up which would have prevented them from getting the role.

But then they only look small to others in the show because they have their arms and body on show, and the other people are generally covered up. Jon Snow himself being around 5'7" 145lbs.

Even "plebs", especially those that did not live in the city (since they were crowded and it was a lot more difficult to keep the animals there), had access to meat. Some were permitted to fish for their own (but not commercial) use and sporadically to hunt. They dried the meat and thus could eat it a little more frequently.

They didn't eat only bread and drink water. The jacked people ate meat, drank milk and wine, and enjoyed fruits. They also simply were not gluttonous and only ate to their needs since gluttony was often discouraged. Since the soils were of higher quality and the animals were not fed slop, the food was more nutritious enabling intuitive eating using the body's natural satiety. The person who only ate bread and drank water died at 30 from malnutrition, looked like dyels their entire life, and were hungry all the time.

The Dying Gaul statue is a great depiction of bodies of the ancient world. Likely he represents a great warrior who had plenty of good good, and represents a strong warriors body.

The victors over him would not present their enemies as small and feeble.

So it still depended on diet. Take the Mongol Empire vs China at the time. Mongols were hunters eating meat and diary and shit. Not sitting around farming and eating grain. Its like a grain based diet vs meat based. So Mongols were more well built also apparently bone structure and shit were different. I heard it a couple places but forget the exact source.
TLDR: Diet and lifestyle of Chad Mongols allowed easier conquest of Virgin grain farmers.

I really dont think the 1g or even .7g per lb of bodyweight is accurate, or at least necessary. My lean body mass is 185lbs and I’ve managed to build some muscle the last few months and there’s no way im eating more than like 100-110g of protein a day.

i believe you can still build muscle on lower levels of protein intake, it’s just not “optimal” or at the fastest rate. But even then, the body can only build fraction of an oz of muscle a day. Gorging on protein daily doesn’t seem necessary, sustainable or enjoyable.

you only need enough amino acids to initiate the protein synthesis mechanism, so I suppose with precisely timed protein consumption you could get away with less protein. But for most people consuming a little more than necessary spread out through the day is ideal. Muscles are built more from carbohydrates than they are protein anyways, you're more just trying to meet a threshold, the rest of the equation is carbs.
