I used to work in public accounting. Not as bad as Investment banking, but I spent large portions of the year working 70+ hours per week. I agree, not worth the money. I left in January for a cushy WFH email job. Left for same pay but my yearly raises will be smaller and I have less room for advancement. But I do 10 of real work a week, so I'll take it.

Because they're basically slaves until they quit their job.
There's two anons on this board that do investment banking.
One is a DYEL neurotic mess that is always saying something about retiring in a few years with millions in the bank, and gets irrationally butthurt whenever someone calls him a larper or laughs at him because he thinks he'll make up for his lost youth with money.
The other one is basically a slave of his manager to the point where he worries if wearing something other than a suit after work might offend his boss and projects that everyone around him is a poorgay lmao.
Investment bankers are just slaves of their work, they get chewed up and cope and seethe 24/7.

I’m a lawyer. I haven’t seen it too often here. I feel like the job used to have more prestige. Before it conjured up images of batemanesque guys driving sportscars and being absolute dickheads. Now I’m not sure what the image is. It had way more glamor when it was a job for high test white males. Btw it sucks

Most lawyers don't make a lot of money. You have to be really good or have really good luck to earn a lot as a lawyer these days, which is ironic considering how hard law school is in most places.
Only good jobs in law these days are govt jobs, which provide stable pay and constant employment regardless of workload.
The prestige associated with a law degree is a boomer meme, a thing of the past.
You'll earn more money and have more luck in the workforce if you just learn a trade and open your own company.

I just finished my law degree a few weeks ago. There's basically no work for me within a 15 mile radius, and almost all the jobs are minimum wage. I could earn more money by doing construction.
Even public administration doesn't look for lawyers, you'll have better luck landing those jobs with a sociology degree or HR experience.
My life is pain, I don't know what the frick I'm supposed to do and where to look for a job, I looked everywhere at this point.

Are you in the U.S.? I can't speak to non-U.S. lawyers (as I've heard they're all undergrad degrees anyway), but if you're in the U.S. you would have to be remarkably incompetent or unlikeable from a back-alley law school to not have a reasonable job ready within a few months of passing the bar. Shoot, I didn't even go to a t14 or have a ton of connections (I'm here after all) but I worked reasonably hard and had a nice law clerkship lined up within 3 months of my passing the bar.

But yes, if you lowered your tone you would be attempting to be the dominant and aggressive person in the conversation. This is a common thing where the dominant person adopts a low tone in a conversation while the uhh... "submissive" I guess person adopts a higher pitch.

Then you aren’t really working a consistent 100hr/week then, are you? You might work that for a week or two, but if you do that and have the next month off then what’s the flex?

Also idc how proudly blue collar, old school, cheap beer drinker you are. No one can consistently work 100hr weeks for an extended period of time. You physically need sleep. Everyone does. No amount of telling someone “suck it up, buttercup” takes away from a biological necessity. Only exception is if your job pays you to sleep at work, like firefighters. But if that’s the case then kinda disingenuous to say you work 100hr weeks then.

Depends on where you live. Here it's a matter of x number of hours before a half hour or longer break, with a minimum time between shifts. No restrictions on days in a row worked though.

I technically work 40 hours a week but I barely do actual work for an hour a day. I logged in almost four hours ago and in this time I've spent like 15 minutes fixing other peoples mistakes from yesterday and then I watched NHL recaps and worked out and now I'm wondering if I should go out to read a book for a while before tennis and snooker start.

    I've worked
    >40 hrs/wk for a moderate pay
    >70-90 hrs/wk for 3x overtime and 4x weekends bloated pay
    >4 (maybe?) hrs/wk for a below market pay

So far I VASTLY prefer the latter. It's not even close. NEETs know what's up. There still are corpo jobs that allow you to do this but I'm not giving any tips.

The less I work the happier I am. I get the freedom to
    >never use the Clock.app
    >sleep till 11 (occasionally)
    >do a midday/morning workout (I still prefer the evenings)
    >never have to commute
    >never interact with people on the roads/public spaces/shops during peak hours
    >actually catch some sunlight during the day in these long European winters
    >etc

It's more valuable to me than some taxed to hell europennies I'll spend anyway to recover from interactions with normies.

      This.
I worked a corpo rat job that paid REALLY well for 4 years and decided to quit when I realized I had zero time and energy for myself after work. I was working overtime half the time, regularly had 60 - 80 hour work weeks, which gave me chronic headaches from looking at screens and paperwork all the time and got me hooked on painkillers. At some point I was literally waking up tired after 10 hours of sleep, with eye pain and a headache.
Then got a desk job at my country's border patrol, best decision of my life. I literally get paid for lifting at my workplace gym and I get to train at the shooting range once a week, my job is also 20% fieldwork so I go out for patrols and check stuff with the other sometimes. I almost never exceed 40 hours a week, except for the occasional 12 or 24 hour shift which gives me 3 days off right after. The pay is alright, I got insurance, I don't have to worry about a manager throwing me out because I didn't meet draconian company quotas for the month, I don't feel like a zombie after work and I actually like the people I work with, which is much more important to me than a few extra shekels.

If an anon is reading this - don't waste your life just for a bit of extra money if you're already living comfortably. You'll only look back at your life and be disappointed that you wasted your time and energy working your fingers to the bone for basically nothing in return.

    >literally want to commit suicide every day I go because of how humiliated I am about how I’ve ruined and wasted my working life and thinking about how everyone spent their 20s developing skills, job hopping to get more money and new skills, etc. while I have done nothing
    >the thought of quitting and doing a job interview terrifies me and I don’t even know where to go or what to do, especially now since I hear about how horrible the job market is after 2 years of “the best job market in history” where I still did nothing
    >don’t even want some “idealistic” career like a person working from home for an hour a day while making a quarter million dollars a year like everyone on fit has, just want a regular job that I somewhat enjoy or at least don’t feel humiliated going to that takes the hours from the day where I don’t have to feel severely depressed and suicidal like I do now

At this point I’m basically indistinguishable from a person who wasted all of their 20s being a neet. There’s not even any job or career that I even want to do and if there was it wouldn’t matter because I have zero confidence I can do anything requiring any brainpower or responsibility whatsoever. Every day I’m hoping that I drop dead of a heart attack

All you have to do is start in a clerical position and work your way up! I went from assistant to vice president by staying at the company for 36 years. When I got hired in 1987 I was only making $18,000 a year! You kids are complaining about making $30,000 to start??? It's ridiculous. When me and my wife retired we worked HARD our whole lives and EARNED a 1.6 million dollar home. We bought it for $400,000 and sold because we were SMART and HARDWORKING. Kids these days don't want to WORK and keep leaving the company every year. Well let me tell you I did some hiring and I DONT WANT NO JOB HOPPER. You gotta PAY YOUR DUES and wait 5 years before you get promoted or a raise and DON'T YOU EVEN TRY negotiating with me because I'll just fire you on the spot. I EARNED my 3 rental homes we retired with and we were SMART when we signed at 3% interest in 2002. My mortgages on then are only $500 and the rent I charge is $2,100. And don't even THINK it's easy, I have to pay handymen to fix the drier or pull out a tree like once every 3 months on EACH house. Let me tell you covid almost busted me on that rent stuff but we made it through. Still can't believe I fell for that vaccine stuff be me and her got the two plus one booster before we caught it anyway....

Anyway you kids need to learn what HARD WORK IS. I'm glad that there are immigrants who know what it is to work. I can't BELIEVE how lazy you are.

Frick that, if I have to work for the next 50 years I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity to be able to relax and enjoy some of my time.
