Manual labor and

I'm going to start my first construction job and I want to know how it is. I heard all the stories of people destroying their backs and knees, coming home so tired they fall asleep in their work clothes, become alcoholic, etc. Is it really that bad?

Yes and no. If you eat like shit (fast food everyday, gas station rollers, etc you'll get fat and feel like crap). Make your food beforehand, drink plenty of water, don't smoke. Your body will get used to it.

Don't try to be a hero lifting heavy shit without safety precautions. No job is worth your health anon.

I find when I'm working out on site grafting all day, I'm in a much better mindframe to have a good workout. It's the days I'm office based, sat on my arse all day where I find it more difficult to motivate for the gym afterwards

Was I already fired or did I get myself fired when I returned to work?
    >Be me, work as a merchandiser stocking our company's products at retail stores
    >Start taking medicine for anxiety
    >First month went well
    >Second month, start going through a manic episode while at a store
    >Abruptly leave and call manager that I'm going through a medical emergency
    >Call in for a week and then tried going back to work
    >Couldn't go through the whole day so called in again for about two weeks
    >Last weekend while cleaning my apartment misplaced my phone so I couldn't call my manager each morning
    >This past Monday call my manager to tell her I'm stopping by the office
    >Go to the office
    >Manager says she'll be there when I know I saw her car
    >Makes me wait two hours in my car and the lobby
    >Finally walked in and they see me with pajamas on

So did they fire me beforehand or when they saw me walk in with pajamas?

    > Is it really that bad?
Not really. Just eat good food not gas station or fast food shit. Try to get a good amount of sleep each night. Don't try to lift super heavy shit alone. It also depends a lot of what type of work you are doing on how it impacts your body. I have been doing labour jobs for about a decade and my back is fine so far, knees are a bit busted from not wearing kneepads as often as I should have. So invest in good kneepads and boots. Do stretches they do actually help. Know your rights, refuse unsafe or dangerous work, if you have health benefits for massages or chiropractors then use em'

if you're strong enough you can just be the dumb muscle that pulls cable all day.
might be more of an industrial thing tho.

not as much math required as you think, at least not until you get into the advanced stuff. most of your math isn't calculating electrical shit, but measuring fractions for when you're installing stuff and reading a tape measure. that being said, i used khan academy algebra 1 material and the algebra 2 material on polynomials and I aced my aptitude test

Not OP, but potentially starting plumbing apprenticeship soon. How bad is new construction plumbing on your body compared to moving or landscaping for instance?

        Anonymous

New construction you'll be drilling holes all day and moving shit for people. Service Plumbing is what effs up your body. Getting into weird spots moving heavy shit by yourself. You name it. No matter what stretch your back and hams out every night, and make your hams , and low back solid. If you do that you will be fine.

As to plumbing, track your own hours, make sure your hours are turned in properly, and learn your craft.

I went from basically a NEET for 8 years with unlimited free time living with parents, to moving states and working as an industrial electrician. The change has been drastic, but I love it. I work 12 hours a day, 6/7 days a week. I meal prep once a week for the whole week. I've been eating the healthiest I've ever had. I wake up at 5am and go to sleep at 9pm. It's the healthiest sleep schedule I've ever had. I walk over 10, 000 steps a day. Good for the heart. I'm the leanest I've ever been. I'm making $2,400 a week after taxes, not counting my side job.

I don't feel tired after work, but the cons are:
I only have about 2 hours after work to do stuff. By the time I'm done showering and eating, it's pretty much bedtime. I can't lift anymore, and instead just do door pull-ups. I hardly have time to talk to loved ones once a week. My feet hurt.

Try it out. Eat healthy and sleep right. Don't be dumb. You should be good.
