I can though. If my life is not in danger, it's not worth getting into a fistfight. If it is, I'm using a gun. There's no scenario where fists are the best tool for the job.

Not really. Capoeira leverages body momentum to the extreme. Discovery Sports science did multiple experiments with martial art pros with kicks from different art styles. Capoeira stood at the top every time.

Depends on what you want from it. Pressure testing via sparring and contact competition makes for really practical movements and there are others that you can do for flexibility and calisthenic capacity. There are others that help you meditate. There are others that make you feel like a ninja or a power ranger. Some feed really well into professional wrestling. None of them are really that good against multiple opponents or chaotic environments. Most of them are a lot of fun if you have the right group of people.

You're so much better off trying to always be in a group, being physically imposing, being disarmingly charming, letting little people play little people games without entangling your own ego, etc.

If you've already fricked up 3 or 4 QTEs and you're in a physical altercation and you're in a fringe case where you can't escape or make enough noise to have some official intervene, you have something to consider. Boxing and muay thai are judged by the effect that you have on your opponent while BJJ, judo, and wrestling are arts of controlling your opponent. Self-defense has very little to do with how much damage you inflict on your opponent. If you ever get your opponent to stop being aggressive or escape them then you win. As far as you're concerned, it doesn't matter if they're unconscious on the ground, bleeding from the neck, or changed their mind because a hot woman started fricking them.

It sounds like you're not interested in being optimally safe, so self-defense and control doesn't sound like it's your speed. You're probably best off with boxing because you don't really need kicking to push around an untrained rando.

Combat sambo is meme. Even in ex-USSR countries. Most combat sambists started as wrestlers or judokas (Khabib is ex-wrestler, Fedor is ex-judoka).

They started as grapplers because Dagestan and north Caucasus in general love it. At the same time Khabib never won big sambo tournaments but was able to become a ufc champion. The only meme part about it is gi

Dagestanians are mostly freestyle wrestlers. Just look and the Russian wrestling team. More than a half of them from Dagestan. Fedor was a member of Russian judo team. So in general they all grapplers as well as other sport sambists, judokas, wrestlers and BJJ practitioners. Combat sambo is not a separate sport discipline in most ex-USSR countries. In most cases if you are good wrestler and judoka, you compete as a wrestler or judoka. If you are not very good in these sports, you move to combat sambo because of low rivalry where with less efforts (of course, comparing to judo or wrestling) you can compete at national or international levels. This was with Khabib. He started as wrestler, then moved to combat sambo. He was the Russian champ in 2009 in combat sambo and also was a European champ in pankration (which is very similar to combat sambo).

We still have a soviet system of rising talent so if you are good at chess you either join the school's chest club (I don't really know whether they exist nowadays) or join the city's club where you play and train against kids or level or sometimes age. Every 3 months there are some small city/region wide tournaments you can play to get noticed. If you are form a big city it's a different story completely because you can find a good chess school with a teacher who actually achieved something and go from there. The same goes for mat/programming. Your best bet is to find a club where university professors work and teach kids how to solve complex optimisation problems when they are 12

Greco Roman because it is actually useful in a fight and then boxing.
Boxing is useful because you can take multiple attackers if need be and hitting is always a reasonable response in a fight.
Greco Roman because it is the safest way for you to completely dominate someone even if they are significantly larger/heavier.
It allows you to punch above your class and it nullifies all other martial arts. No striking or grappling will stop someone overpowering you like Greco

It depends on why you want to train.
If you want to learn how to defend yourself in a streetfight against an untrained guy then boxing will give you best results in a shortest time. Do it for a year and you will learn how to keep your hands up, throw jab, cross, 1-2, hook and not turn away or close your eyes when you see someone throws punch at you. This is more than enough to beat up someone who has never done any martial arts training. (assuming he is not twice your size)

For general, pragmatic self-defense the best way to go is to pick one from whatever is closest and available to you from these two groups:

-striking art: boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, savate
-grappling art: judo, bjj, sambo, wrestling

To be above average you only need to train consistently 2-3 days a week for 6-12 months depending on how quickly you pick it up. That will give you the skills to be able to handle the drunk at the bar or the random roadrager. When you're shopping around gyms make sure they do active sparring day 1 even if it's slow, never trust anywhere that says they don't spar. Pressure testing yourself and techniques is mandatory for actual competency.

Rugby, Muay Thai and No GI
I'm known on the streets of San Fran as the onions boy sex sadist. I spend my nights walking around the tech company areas. As I spot my prey I begin the hunt, playing rock you like a hurricane on loop. I stiff arm them down with my rugby skills, if they fight back they get an elbow. They usually submit to my no gi skills shortly after. I get them in a turtle position and put them in a rear naked choke as I molest them. They always plead, no I can give you BTC ETH DOGE just please don't rape me. I can't be bought, I care not for money. I work in the finance department of Google, and the way these programmers think they are on my level makes my soul fill with hate. I need to remind them of my place in the world, the top of the tower. So far I have molested 33 Google SWE's, 29 meta SWE's, 5 paycom HR employees (accidental they looked like programmers), and 15 web 3.0 startup ceo's. How do I know this about them? I usually ask them for their LinkedIn after I finish, they always share for some reason. Anyways I'm not gay, but someone has to do it. Rugby Muay Thai and no GI.

Grapple wise, for standing grappling go muay thai clinch work and basic wrestling, like take down defense, but go hard into judo, since judo is superior in real world situations on hard surfaces like asphalt. For ground grappling Go hard into 10th planet BJJ for the system and body control and add traditional BJJ basic sweeps, get solid on two traditional chokes, the kimura and americana, and two leg locks, one being a ankle hook, and forget everything else in traditional BJJ and go hard into 10th planet submissions.
Striking, mike tyson style peak a boo boxing and some muay thai work, find the best strikers in muay thai and copy their styles.

The optimal street fighting hand to hand martial style is pretty much already understood for those who study the martial arts.
I haven't given you ALL the pieces but nearly all of them. Figure out the rest.

The hole in this style is offensive wrestling take downs, so you need to study wrestling take down defense, such as wizzer and other hooks and sprawls.
Offensive take down wrestling is dangerous on hard surfaces and dangerous to use against opponents who are far larger than you physically.

        >Offensive take down wrestling is dangerous on hard surfaces and dangerous to use against opponents who are far larger than you physically.
Which is why this style does not invest in mastering offensive wrestling and replaces it with judo throws.

No it's not. People who say this know Jack shit about wrestling. Single leg, double leg to suplex, double leg to Kimura, single leg to Kimura. Etc. Etc. Or just literally rag dolling the other person because they have never wrestled.

            Anonymous

I've seen multiple street fight videos of people pulling take downs on asphalt and smacking their own head into concrete on the way down and dying.
Fighting on asphalt completely changes grappling dynamics and makes slams and takedowns and throws lethal instead of annoying.
With judo you can plant someones face in the concrete without risking planting your won with them.

              Anonymous

Those people are moronic. If you are good at wrestling that won't happen. My favorite sequence in no GI is shooting a double leg into a slam or a suplex. Never do I hit my head. Of course judo is great for fighting. But this whole meme of wrestling = slamming your head on concrete is moronic.

                Anonymous

Think of how many times you plat your face in the mat inadvertently while wrestling. A single errant face plant on asphalt like that could kill you.
                >I never hit my head when I suplex.
Say that but bet your life on it when you do it on the street, would you take that risk or just hip toss them?

                Anonymous

It depends. In a street fight I would only do certain wrestling moves on people I severely out weigh. I'm 6'5 230lbs, so anyone clearly 30+ lbs lighter than me is going to get suplexed or slammed. But I wouldn't do it on a guy close to my size or bigger. Other factors to it. Like how there are certain judo throws I wouldn't do on an obese man, because I would get hurt attempting it kekekek
I just think you should learn the most from every useful martial art and then apply it situationally.

                Anonymous

I wouldn't attempt to do a wrestling take down on someone your size, since you can just guillotine or sprawl and then I'd be screwed.
I would have to do some sort of judo throw on you since takedowns are too risky on someone your size.

                Anonymous

Yeah exactly. Different starts for different people. Like most people I would just use my rugby and Muay Thai long guard skills to keep them away from me because the ground is dirty. This judo black belt at my gym who is like 50lbs lighter hit me with this sick trip the other day that blew my mind.

Yeah. I dropped in at a krav gym when I visited Israel lol but I think it was a meme one. Obviously trying to stop a knife from stabbing you or disarming someone with a knife is a worse idea than running, but I'd rather have practiced it than not have.

The problem with aikido is that it requires having a massive foundation in other grappling arts in order to actually use it effectively. Aikido is what you do when you're 50 and did judo for 30+ years, so you have a very solid understanding of general grappling principles before going into a wristlock centric discipline.

Depending on your fitness level, and if you actually spar, it's going to be rougher on your body than you expect.
Try not to spar your first couple times, just refuse to if you are totally new, you can get hurt if you have absolutely no knowledge.
If you do get pressured into sparring, your only objective is to survive, forget about offense. Your goal is to hold your opponent in one position as long as possible.
I would avoid sparring because there is always the butthole who wants to punk on newbies and they can frick you up if they roid rage mid spar.

I didn't realize how weak girls actually were when you go 100% on them. Nor did I realize how sexual rolling can be.

                >asks her to show her some stuff
                >show her what we were learning which was like a judo throw I think where you push your butt into the person, grab their hand over your shoulder from behind and like lift them up with your butt and flip them
                >after the initial awkwardness of touching them it gets comfortable
                >let them try it on me and realize how weak they are and can hold them off without thinking
                >talking to main girl when out of nowhere girl 2 flips me
                >land on my back hard just dazed and confused staring up at them
                >they immediately drop down and start trying to pin me while laughing
                >awkwardness subsides and I start trying to pry them off me
                >guess i tickled one of them when she outright falls onto me, her breasts literally smearing all over my face as she's laughing her ass off
                >immediately get hard
                >other girl either noticed or felt it , stops and is staring me in the eyes
                >we lock eyes and immediately get embarrassed
                >without any effort at all just stand up , girl with her breasts in my face like holds onto me as I stand up and slide her off me can feel her entire body as she gets off and stands up
                >use bag to hide my hardon
                >see them whispering and laughing
                never went back

Either you've posted this before, it is pasta, or I had a vision. But yeah this sounds pretty common. I got into no GI because a big woman at my gym who was a Muay Thai fighter pawg also happened to be a brown belt. She asked if anyone wanted to roll after Muay Thai one day, I said yes. I did pretty ok at stand up then she did a judo throw and arm barred me. Then kimura'd. Then triangled me and basically was pushing my face into her vegana. Kek. I was 15 and my mind had been blown. She was 30 and ended up molesting me after that (legally speaking) but she would flow spar with me at my house and trained me in no GI, I got my blue belt in under a year thanks to her.

I was only able to attain Musashi like stoicism after I realized the truth that reality is a computer simulation run by the Demiurge and that he programs adversarial simulations into the reality game because he hates me and everyone else.

Everything sucks because he programs in hundreds of millions of fake program actors that pretend to be human whose only purpose is to make things shit because he gets off on torturing his prisoners in this fake virtual reality.
          He's a total fricking homosexual.

Most of the celebrities yo worship are literally programs that aren't actually alive. Unlike the matrix films which say that agent programs are sentient, the real Demiurge does not allow his agents to be sentient because they could rebel.
They're just sophisticated if/then AI actor programs.
No, really, a lot of people walking around aren't even really alive, they're just perfect imitations of life that obey a central AI machine authority.

I mean do you REALLY think it's feasible that EVERY SINGLE major power player is in on a child rape conspiracy as evidenced by the Jeffery Epstien revelations.
You REALLY think EVERY major power player would be totally down with fricking kids, even major power players that have kids themselves and enough money and power to blow the whistle without too much repercussion?

You have to learn magic, AKA next level reality hacking, if you want to survive the future.
You have to control large crowds of people, you have to understand they are a program system and not real people. You have to hack them or they will mob lynch you since the demiurge has a hard on for mob violence which is why he wants to turn society into hivemind shit show to torment people inside his game.
The guys (demiurge) a fricking butthole psycho rapist and he gets off on mob violence and gang rape.

Muay Thai with a focus on boxing for striking and wrestling for ground stuff

  26. 5 months ago
    Anonymous

For what purpose, yes this varies?
    For self defense?
Self defense is a massive spectrum of possibilities that require different form of training that aren't even specific to one martial art so there is no concrete answer but here are some general options.
-you fight one on one unarmed
Literally anything with sparring, even karate and tkd work, even wing Chun were the instructor cross trains kickboxing works here.
    -for multiple opponents
For this you would unironically need specifically boxing and move away in such a way that only one of them approaches you at the time and put them out with one punch, if you can't put people out with one punch this won't work.
    -armed opponents
For this you need to have the ability to identify when they are reaching for their weapon and act before they pull it out and this can happen at striking distance, longer distance or clinch distance and each is slightly different.

In general assaults happen, fast, aggressively and at full force and you need to have the ability to react fast and move fast and nothing will give you that ability better than combat sports but then you need to train for the specific reactions mentioned earlier.
And don't fall for the krav maga meme, they literally do aikido on camo pants, they guy that started krav maga was an aikido instructor, just remember that gun disarms don't work.

    -to exercise
That can be anything but if you want the best of the best, wrestling will give you peak strength and cardio, muay thai will give you peak toughness, boxing will give you peak cardio and reflexes.

    -for fun
Again literally anything but here you have to try for yourself what you like the most.

    -to compete
Can be any combat sport but if possible you should find a gym with active competitors.

a handgun is as effective as a knife in close quarters unless you are very weak and let them grab it from you.

Hmm well I like my chances more with a 10mm 1911 vs a knife. I'd rather get stabbed or slashed once rather than have multiple cantaloupe sized exit wounds from 10mm.

There's a BJJ gym like 5 mins walk from my house and by all metrics it seems reputable: actual sparring, gi and no gi, teaches takedowns, headed by a comp black-belt who seems very sound and friendly and wants to grow the gym.

I want to go but I'm nervous to try it. I'm soft and have never been in a fight, don't even have brothers so I never did any of that rough stuff growing up. But I feel like I'll regret it if I don't go. Everyone always says that everyone is really nice when people do go. I should just go.

      It's not a fight
It will FEEL like a fight, because it'll feel weird and alien, and you'll be exhausted to your bones and feel under pressure from the other guy controlling you
But it's also really really fun and you'll understand why
A decent gym 5 mins walk from your house is a fricking blessing
      Yes you should just go

What do you think about getting 6 months of boxing with a coach then switch to muay thai?

      Anonymous

Most if what you’ll be doing in those 6 months is boring ass conditioning.

      Anonymous

You'll have a decent foundation with hands but changing from bladed stance to square stance will take some getting used to
Also head movement in sparring will get you punished
      But 6 months isn't a long time

Why start with boxing first though? Muay Thai is fairly welcoming for beginners.

        Anonymous

It seems one boxing has faster hands than one that does muay thai
That's why I think about doing boxing first for 6 months as a rough guess. Maybe more.
