He’s pretty dumb, he got himself thrown in prison and he lost everything to an ex-wife that just married him for money. Guys of even average intelligence are generally able to control themselves and their actions well enough to stay out of prison. Also see

Well if that's true then he's a genius at fighting and a moron at other stuff.
He didn't just punch a bag to train, he would watch videos of his competitors and work out ways to defend and counter them

I wasn't raised by the streets, and my only options weren't:
-joining a gang and risking my life & freedom
-trying to escape poverty by becoming a world renowned fighting legend; which also provided the added benefit of the potential protection of family and friends in a rough environment

Cus Damato found a desperate kid from the hood and promised him a world of silence, safety, regular food and peace (most importantly) in exchange for being his work-Black person. Damato invested a lot of time and money into this kid and was repaid many times over throughout his career. Stockholm Syndrome to the max with Mike. Look at the way he speaks about his captors (using this word unironically). No workey= no peace, no regular meals. Damato brain-raped this kid into equating selfless sacrifice for the happiness of others, for love (something Mike never had growing up). He was groomed to be a fighter and branded/marketed as the black James Braddock. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone could look like this when food/shelter is leveraged against training/subservience.

i agree. Cus Damato's relationship with mike is a lot more predatory and a lot less lovey dovey 'father replacement' tier than people like to make out. Cus treated Mike like a dog. With a "i give an order you obey" attitude. Mike was essentially brainwashed by Damato to make his whole life boxing and training.

Ever since his last big champion Floyd Patterson was btfo by Sonny Liston and then muhammad ali Damato had been looking for his very own sonny liston to groom in to being a vicous fighter and found it with mike. He would go around gyms trying to scout out fighters with the athletic ability and killer instinct for years before finding mike.

He would then take mike in to his house which was just an eternal fight camp for mike. Anyone who has never boxed or knows little about boxing would think "whats so bad about that?" Fight camps are grueling 8 or 12 week programs designed to get a fighter in peak condition. Cus had the mentality that a disciplined fighter essentially lived 24/7 in one of these camps. Mike very much had no life outside of training while under Cus' control. And Cus made sure it stayed that way until he died. Mike sacrificed literally all of his teenage years. I dont mean that in a metaphorical sense. Evey waking hour of Mike's teenage years was spent on training. He didnt get to hang around with friends or go to movies. He got to box and then lift and then box some more. Its no wonder Mike went off the rails so hard.

I imagine Cus dying and leaving his training house would have felt like leaving a cult for Mike.

        >Cus had the mentality that a disciplined fighter essentially lived 24/7 in one of these camps
Well he was correct because Mike was the greatest heavy weight of all time

I wouldnt say he was the best heavyweight ever. Perhaps ONE of the most technically proficient and well trained/skilled. As in his body mechanics and style were honed to perfection in his prime. There is too much emphasis on the physical attributes of boxing and because of this a lot of top fighters never really learn to box properly and beat their opponent with pure physicality. Mike had both skill and physicallity.

But Cus Damato's peekaboo style was very taxing and draining for fighters. The style very much focuses on using rolls/slips to constantly keep your head off the line while transferring weight, allowing you to set up big punches from either hand while evading you opponent's punches. You see mike struggle in later rounds with his style because it requires constant head movement and big pendulum steps, both of which are hard to keep up for 12 rounds.

I think many of today's top heavyweights would beat mike. Usyk, Fury, perhaps even some of the lesser heavyweights like wilder or Whyte would have a chance. But does that make them 'better' than mike? I would say no. Out of all of those mentioned i would say Usyk is the only one who is as skilled as mike.
