No, I do the same. I'm stupid but pushed myself to good grades and good uni degree with this technique. Basically I would write down whole chapters and uni notes again and again until I developed some type of automatic memory I guess?

There are some topics which require understanding, but there are also many that require memorization. And most require a combination of both.
