They sell things at the food court for a loss, they aren't allowed to go above a certain profit percentage on any product, they sell gas at a loss, and the only thing that's genuinely making them money is the memberships. They've created a system where they never, ever need to raise prices substantially like other grocers and all they need to do is keep prices low so more people buy the $60 per year or $120 per year memberships

There are plenty of loss leaders in store which is made up in other inflated products and yes memberships. Memberships however are only $4/month and I can easily make that money back from pumping a full tank of gas since theyre usually 10% cheaper than the off brand gas stations. You really have to DYOR and pay attention to get the most out of going to Costco tbh.
