Does this do anything a step back lunge doesn't?

You can do more weight and it's better for hypertrophy because the muscle tension is constant

it's a more effective version of that

only if you lift bigboy weights. most people do this lift as a way to avoid having to lift heavy weights.

Maybe this is a sport specific rom? Not much use in training ranges that he wouldn't use on the tracks. Just talking out of my ass though

i'd much rather atg squat 405 for 5X5 than do one set of split squats with 20kg dbs, that stuff is pure mental torture. sometimes i can't make it to the gym and do these instead at home - fricking loathe it. the only exercise that comes close in how much i hate doing it is weighted lunges.

One reason why I do it besides correcting a muscle imbalance from knee surgery 1.5 years ago that still fricks with me is to mog those who are weak minded. You have an impressive squat, so no shade on you, but on the dyels who can't progress in these because they're tOo hArD

          Anonymous

the reason i still do them (and a bunch of other exercises i absolutely loathe) is precisely because i hate doing them - not doing them would feel like losing. now i'm trapped misery-maxxing doing exercises i hate for the rest of my life i guess.

Almost unparalleled glute and upper quad builder but makes your palms sweaty and your heart race with nervousness before you begin. The dyel graveyard is piled with souls who decided that they'd rather have chicken legs than do these

My back foot always get sore and uncomfortable doing these, also its hard to keep balance. Any tips?

Same. This kills my back foot and for some reason makes my quads on my non-working leg extremely sore.

asking again from the last BSS thread, but, how to avoid compensating? my propped up leg always kicks in when i'm near failure

stop emanating so much goddamn victim-hood. since they are making fun of your ass an appropriate retort would be to shit in a sock and beat them with it.

to be honest they probably are, i've never had any other male comment on my ass or ever heard of any male commenting on another males ass. either beat the shit out of the them as a warning or you're gonna get raped one of these days.

great now you got me worried about doing too many hip thrusts. strong glutes feel great though and help with posture immensely. how do you get a strong ass but not a big ass?

      Anonymous

I'm someone who uses their quads to squat. RDLs, hip thrusts, and BSS make up my glute work when I count volume despite squatting ATG twice a week.

        Anonymous

I squat 3x a week. BSS 3x a week. RDL and deadlift once a week, hip thrusts twice a week.

Still not as painful as having a Hank Hill ass. The fear of my ass becoming flat and flabby is greater than my fear of pain. My ass has always been my greatest ASSet and I can't bear the thought of losing it.

Now try elevating your heel on a half foam roll and doing them. By far the most quad devastating exercise

How the frick do I keep balance with these? I have zero issue with step back lunges but I can't even balance bodyweight on split squats.

there's no easily explainable trick to it, it just takes practice

        Yeah I figured.

        Use your back foot.

All I can do with it is press down harder but that doesn't really help.

          Anonymous

Do them really slow to get those stabilizing muscles working. Do whatever weight you feel comfortable without losing balance and form until you feel secure.

I found out I have to do these as therapy after a back injury. Left leg is so atrophied that I'm shaky after just a few body weight reps.

    >not just holding dumbells
Why bother holding a barbell in this awkward position when you don't have to?

      Anonymous

maybe they squat more than 2pl8 and their gym doesn't have 100kg dumbells?

      Anonymous

You can use more weight with a bar, and it's more convenient since I was already using a barbell for other movements. Grip is irrelevant since I do weighted dead hangs on leg day anyway, and failing is safe because of safeties
      >awkward position
It's actually less awkward than dumbbells IMO, what makes you say that?
