    when you do push something you use a certain group of muscles
    when you pull something you use another group of muscles, there is some overlap but it's a good way to split your muscles into 2 groups

    this is why talking about 'horizontal pulls' and 'vertical pulls' and all that makes no sense. your body doesn't care which direction it's facing. the muscles just contract. it's the same muscles doing the same thing

      If you change the direction of the pull different muscles activate. The lat attaches between the arm and the lower back, it's not going to be contracting in an upright pull, if anything, it's lengthening. Contrast this with a pull up.

    Honestly a good way to think about it you'll make better gains with that in mind. That said contracting your muscles in a certain way obviously creates pushing force and could be more simply explained by just saying pushing
