How much do you take? The first time I took 500mg it was like a sunburn for a couple hours and sucked. I got used to it and now it's just warm and tingles. Calms me down too.

whats the proposed benefit of large doses of niacin?

I think it forces huge amount of blood through your system and unclogs you. Someone did it to me because they thought it would be funny. It feels like you’re going to die.

Damn I have only tried the no flush kind, i tale 500mg daily and sometimes 1g if im feeling shit. I still get a little flush though. Best of all, combined with magnesium it will make it so you can actually digest food like when you were younger.

There was this one time, I was living with my gf. She was a gym girl and always had tons of supplements. I'd never taken a preworkout, I just lifted, but one morning we had run out of coffee and energy drinks and I had to be in at like 4am or something. I decided to try some of her stuff to see if it would help since she mentioned it had caffeine in it. I didn't look at the instructions, just eyeballed it and mixed a drink. I had to take a cab for some reason, I think we only had my car and I was doing the nice boyfriend thing letting her take it. The fricking niacin kicked in on my way to work. It was the most intense flush I've ever had. I legitimately thought I was having a stroke or dying. I almost asked the driver to take me to the hospital it was so bad. It started to wane a little once I got to work and I called my girlfriend freaking out that I was dying, I was somewhat shaken up. She told me about the niacin thing, and wouldn't let me live it down afterwards.

kek. Imagine being a wee weenie baby over a niacin flush.

It is a legitimate treatment for schizophrenia that fell out of fashion in the 60s once they realized it worked but they couldn't profit from it.
      3g of vitamin b3. Remember 3of3.
Schizos can't properly metabolize it for whatever reason and need a lot more.

For health? Helps regulate blood pressure/cholesterol and held in the digestion of carbs. One of the ways it does this is dilating your blood vessels so blood flows easier, but this also makes you blood closer to the skin and you feel hot and itchy everywhere. Some peoples feet swell too. Down side is the heart has to work harder to move it all around so your bps can rise really fast. You don’t want a heavy flush dose and workout, especially cardio. At the right level it can give you one of the best pumps of your life if you don’t pass out. You also likely won’t want to share as you look like you have a sunburn for 20min-2hrs later depending on your sensitivity.

It's also apparently pretty good for bipolar disorder and stopping manic moods, somehow.

High vitamin doses treat pretty much every serious psychiatric disorder, it was the first recognised effective treatment for schizophrenia.
The reason it's not used today is because the dosage has to be precisely tailored to the patient, and the line between "stops the voices" and "detonates your liver" is razor thin.
Scientists still don't know why it works because of ethical problems (mainly because of the very high risk of permanently harming trial participants and it's hard to convince schizos to join trials), but as far as I know it's assumed that the blood-brain barrier (an organ which filters blood before it enters your brain) plays a role (which can't be accurately measured unless you're cutting up 1000s of psych patient's brains).

Flush niacin doesn't harm your liver, it's the non flush you have to avoid.

My old dermatologist recommended that I take 500mg of vitamin B3 twice a day in order to reduce acne. Specifically, she recommended the Nicotinamide version of B3. I vaguely remember researching it, and I think dermatologists recommend Nicotinamide over the other versions of B3 because Nicotinamide doesn't cause flushing. And so why don't you guys try Nicotinamide instead?

You use isotretinoin for acne you dumb frick. And a probiotic/kefir/yogurt 2 hours after each pill so your guts won't develop IBS

I actually have to take Accutane for the rest of my life due to a chronic skin condition. And I do take a probiotic supplement + consume a bunch of probiotic foods like kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha in order to help my gut health. But why do think you have to wait 2 hours? I typically take mine right after I take my Accutane since you need fat to help your body to absorb the Accutane.

redpill me on this, my dermatologist tried pushing accutane on me while I was in the middle of a severe eczema flare up and now I take dupixent for that which cleared up my eczema but I still get chin area and back acne

            Anonymous

Not really sure what to tell you.

Accutane is extremely effective at combating acne and other skin conditions. My previous dermatologist had me taking oral antibiotics like Minocycline, Tetracycline, and Doxycycline every single day for over 10 years in order to treat my chronic acne and scalp folliculitis. That caused me to develop a rare disorder called gram-negative folliculitis on the back of my scalp. Basically, I took way too much antibiotics, and so now I have antibiotic resistant super bacteria on my scalp. And the only thing that keeps it at bay is low-dose Accutane (specifically 10mg daily or every other day) - which, as I previously stated, I have to take for the rest of my life.

And so my situation is unique and very rare. For most people, they just have to take a full course of Accutane for several months, and then they're cured for the rest of their life - which is amazing. That's the best case scenario. Some people have to take multiple courses of Accutane, like 2 or 3. And then there's cursed people like me who have to take it forever.

And how it usually works is that you need to take an accumulative dose based on your body weight. I forget the math, but typically you have to take like 40mg every day for 6 months to reach your accumulative dose. That's what I first tried, but I started to get scary side effects about 3 months in like blurred vision, severe pains in my internal organs, chronic lower back pain, joint pain, severely dried out skin, hair loss, extremely depressed and suicidal thoughts, and self-harm tendencies. And so my dermatologist reduced my dose to 20mg daily, which only got rid of the blurred vision and a bit of the body pain, but then I had to stay on it for like 10 months to reach my accumulative dose. I also didn't tell my dermatologists about the negative psychological side effects because I was afraid they wouldn't let me take it anymore.

They make you sign all sorts of waivers like iPledge where you promise not to have a nice day because Accutane is linked to suicide and depression. And there's all sorts of horror stories out there of people getting permanently fricked up my Accutane - both physically and psychologically. And so be careful. It's one of the most dangerous prescriptions that you can take. But also keep in mind that lots of people said it didn't frick them up at all, and that they only suffered from dried lips.

A lot of people on /r/Accutane, especially women, claim that it gives them eczema-like red skin, while others claim that it cured that problem in their skin. Me personally, it makes my skin red.

So, if your skin conditions aren't that bad, I'd personally stay away from Accutane. It's legit dangerous. I'd only use it if I tried topicals, supplements, diet, and other options first and they didn't work.

yeah that's what I was afraid of. I used to be on monocycline and doxycycline back when I was in college and I remember reading at the time that even those antibiotics can have some mental side effects like depersonalization and depression

My younger and more recent dermatologists told me that this was the norm for prior generations of dermatologists. And so basically Boomer doctors thought it was safe to give patients antibiotics every single day for years. And that convinced me not to sue him - which I wish I could go back on now. Motherfricker ruined my life.

The flush-less doesn’t have the cardiovascular benefits and overall is weaker in the other benefits niacin offers. The more you take regular niacin the harsher itch sensation goes away. Still there but not as intense as the first dose.
