Oatmeal making me too gassy?

I like oatmeal a lot but I have noticed that when I eat it, it seems to make me very gassy. I eat it in the morning and go to the gym in the evening after work. So about 6-7 hours after I eat the oatmeal. It definitely doesn't feel good to lift when I am like that. Is there anything I can do besides stop eating it? When I make it I usually do like a half cup of oats(dry), almond milk, peanut butter, half scoop of whey protein and a banana. and some non-fat greek yogurt. Am I somehow just fricking my guts up by doing this?

    What kind of oats? Some of them have a lot of insoluble fiber which can cause you to bloat up. Steel cut oats is preferable IME

      The kind I have is the Quaker "Old Fashioned" oats. Should I be using a different kind? I also make them by not heating them up but by chilling them overnight in the fridge. Does one way or the other cause more gas?

        That shouldn't matter, it depends on how the oats are processed. The insoluble fiber is causing the issues, w/ steel cuts they remove some of the insoluble fiber and roll them up again

          Okay. I will probably try steel cut then. Does fiber frick up everyones guts? I thought it was supposed to help? maybe I am just eating too much at once or something?

            When you eat more fiber your gut is going to notice and bacteria that love fiber will grow strong and multiply and go to war with whatever other non-fiber loving bacteria is there until some sort of equilibrium and peace is reached. During this war cannons are fired. That's what you're noticing. Hopefully the cannons stop firing when your diet has been stable for awhile and they make peace.

            fiber itself should not be making you gassy. I think this is incorrect, and I also think how they're processed won't meaningfully change the fiber content. I would look to how they're cooked

            too much fiber/grains.
            try eating less oatmeal in a serving
            try making it with less protein powder and maybe regular milk or water

            It's the same chief, they will have the same amount of fiber. OP just drink more water and accept that you will be gassy from oats.

        like with beans, cooking oats help break down saccharides that make you gassy. If you eat undercooked beans, you'll be gassy, just as you will be if you don't eat cooked oats that are well-broken down

          this is one area where the raw-diet movement has really got it wrong. I think that community has wrongly fetishized raw eating... maybe it's because it's seductive as more "natural"-seeming or people are in need of some kind of alternative solution to their dietary/health problems, so they buy into this raw diet campaign. But it is solidly understood in nutrition that cooking your food helps break down difficult-to-digest components, as well as frees up and makes much more bioavailable nutrients and vitamins contained in the food. It's understood that animal protein is made much more digestible and bioavailable when cooked, cooking breaks down cellulose and vegetable matter to help release nutrients/vits, and it kills parasites. All of this holds true with oatmeal, which is pretty tough plant matter that has lots of complex starches and fibers that aren't easy to digest

    It may take your body a while to get used to them. Cut down the portion size for a week or two while your gut bacteria adapts. Oats used to make me constipated and fart fiercely but I managed to get over it.

    Get some digestive enzymes and take 'em with the oats. Also add a daily probiotic.

    The phytic acid in oats and most whole grains makes their breakdown in the gut more troublesome. Soaking the grains for several hours helps break down that acid that's bound to the fiber and generally makes it more digestible..
    Try making overnight oats and see if it helps. Take the oats, water/almond milk, and peanut butter, throw them in a jar or sealable container and pop them in the fridge overnight. Then just mix the whey and banana in before serving.

        You're good. Mostly just a fear campaign when I looked into it (i.e. regular oats have it, but are well under toxicity limits). Organic will have a lot less glysophates though.

          1/2 cup milk
          1 tbsp raw honey
          dash of cinnamon
          1 scoop of Orgain vanilla protein powder

    week 1: make the same oats, but cook them fully before putting them in the fridge overnight
    week 2: go back to not cooking overnight oats, but remove whey
    week 3: remove dairy
    week 4: remove almond milk and peanut butter

    In 1 month you'll have the data on what is causing your farts. Grow up and solve your own damn problems.

    as other anons said, try cooking proper and try different processing
    oatmeal will bloat you moar than porridge because making porridge gives the oats time to get saturated and push out any excess air as they swell, i don't actually know how you guys cook oatmeal because it's not eaten here but that's what you want to be doing even if you're not making porridge
    i get bloated if i drink milk & yogurt or kefir because the yogurt/kefir is fermenting the milk, depends on how much i drink though
