A huge percentage of the cows in my area are open range in Forrest land for most of the year, and eat farm waste straw in the winter. So you can for sure raise cattle without taking up farm land.
I am a vegan leaning vegitarian for health and ethical reasons, but it's a bit silly to pretend every acer of cows is a potential wheat field.
Now the argument that those open lands should be for wild ruminants to me is a stronger one, and returning most cattle land to nature and freeing up hunting for meat eaters would be more environmental and healthy.

These pictures never make any sense because they completely disregard how livestock farming actually works. It's all part of the same cycle and it works so efficiently its magic.
In farming and agriculture there are two kinds of land, arable land which is land you grow food and crops on and marginal land which is land where crops can't grow. You raise livestock on marginal land and can use the by products and waste from your crops on arable land to help feed your animals. Arable land also only takes up 1/3 of all agricultural land meaning you can't just plant crops in the overwhelming majority of land where animals are raised.
An animal like a cow just fricking grazes on grass all day that already grows fricking everywhere.
And this is the most basic simplified explanation of farming possible, its much more complicated and streamlined than this, not even including factory farming.
