Chickens
In a collapse use your head and gather some farmables from the local grocery and pet store if you can. Grab bags of dry beans and brown rice to plant. Rice is quick to grow and likes swampy conditions. Can grow potatoes and yams just by sprouting them a little, cutting them up and planting them. Can grow ginger, onions and garlic just by planting the rooted part. Can plant cactus pads, jicama and yucca root. Can grow most fruits from seeds but they won’t necessarily grow the same fruit they came from. Apricots, limes and prickly pear are all good tough plants that are hard to frick up. Grab a bag of bird seed to grow millet and sunflower seeds to eat; slingshot and eat the birds, rats and squirrels they attract. Trap and farm rabbits, geese or iguanas since they all mostly need grass and water. Would be hard to feed animals that need seed n feed if you don’t have the local infrastructure for it. Pigs can live off grass for quite a while, but most breeds need denser food like acorns, rotten fruit, meat etc to grow fast and put on lard.
The trouble with chickens is that they need lots of protein to grow and make eggs so in a SHTF situation you will probably want to eat whatever you’re feeding to them. An aggressive foraging breed on some rich buggy pasture could work but the production would be slow if you didn’t have more to feed them.
Solid niche livestock. Could live off edible weeds and worms for a long time especially if you got the fat from fish and birds.

I’ll probably hunt and fish and max out my 4 freezers as usual and make sure I keep my gas cans filled to live off fish and venison and use the generator for 3 months to last longer than everyone else assuming the blast doesn’t take me out. I live in rural flyover and have 40 acres and live on a lake though I unironically made it so I understand everyone can’t do this. The big issue will be my wife getting off her meds because the supply chain will break down and the b***h will go nuts and I might kill her and use her as bait
I farm red wigglers. They reproduce relatively quickly and are very easy to keep alive once you understand their needs, which boils down to roughly within 20 degrees of room temperature, damp but not soggy, intermittent airflow, and plenty of newspaper and dead greenery.
I can eat them straight by frying them or I can ration them out by using them to fish or bird hunt. It just takes a few dozen home depot buckets to house 10,000 worms which double their population every two months or so.

Chickens, goats and pigs will eat literally anything, and goats and chickens make milk and eggs. Bugs are also an option since a lot of them will eat anything, but personally I'd rather use bugs to feed chickens.
