how exactly does one do a one-hand push up?
is it a matter of coordination or strength?

It's both. Doing one with good form like vidrel requires a ton of tricep, shoulder, and core strength. Not as much chest as you'd think. If you can do 10 dips you have enough chest strength to do a 1 arm pushup. But you also need to be able to balance and control yourself well because the exercise is inherently unstable; the closer your feet get together, the more coordination you need to perform the exercise. The fastest strategy to achieve it I've seen was from the book "The Naked Warrior." You start with doing your 1 arm pushups on an elevated surface for sets of 5 every day. Over time you get lower and lower until you're doing them on the ground. I'd add that you should use this method with feet spread apart, and once you get to the ground, start slowly working your foot stance narrower and narrower. Best of luck OP
I'd like to add that there is a massive difference in difficulty between doing them strict vs with bad form like this https://youtu.be/Tmtq-auc--A
I would go as far as to say that strict one arm pushups are an advanced calisthenics skill
thanks for the book rec. so it's an entirely different type of exercise then?
It's definitely an exercise that carries over well to athletic endeavors but doesn't do too much for building muscle or brute strength after a certain point. It's a fun goal to strive for, which in itself is a good thing, but if you're not a fighter or something and you're not just doing it for recreation then you'd be better off focusing on something else as a primary exercise
holy shit that guy is strong as frick
holy frick that is impressive
Earlier I went and put my hands on my scale in the pushup position and it said 50kg. Would it be reasonable to say that 1 pushup roughly equals a 50kg bench press and thus a 1 hand pushup would be around 100kg?
Dumbbell maybe, barbell bench is not comparable to 1h pushups
It's still more difficult to do a 1h pushup than an equivalent 1h dumbbell bench.
>50kg
what bw% would that be for you? i tested this as well for me 65% for standard pu position and 74% if feet elevated on a chair
70kg
Sorry I misread, just woke up 2 mins ago
I'm 70kg so that would be about 71% bw

It takes a decent amount of strength. When I was able to do them in the past I could do sets of 25-30 normal push-ups. Balance isn't nearly as important for it compared to something like a pistol squat.
1 hand?For me it's Revy 2 hands
Start by with the non-supportive arm grabbing on the support arm that's below your opposite chest, hold this posture on each side 3x a day until you can make it to lowering yourself and train that until you can do one arm push ups, might take a few months.
Interesting. Like grabbing thes upport arm under the armpit?
