Height is correlated with deep hip sockets, which is the real explanation. Different hip mechanics excel at different movements.
Africans and Euros don't squat because of the long legs, but if you do mobility exercises you can go ATG in a few months.
Literally no reason for my long Western European deep hip socketed ass to ATG squat. I do it for a fun stretch, or with weight maybe like once a month just to feel cute. Otherwise no point other than “muh mobility”

But the additional stimulus from maximizing the knee bend and stretch on the muscle more than makes up for the lack of force production. No one is saying you should replace regular squats with deep knee bends either. They're best in combination.
You can do it on a wedge safely. challenging your calves and balance doesnt do anything for knee flexion, if anything you would hurt your knees from the wobble on planes of movement a knee is not supposed to bed
