Sardines?

Does IST like sardines?

I've been seeing a lot of sardines in fitness media recently, they're low calorie, low in fat and high in protein.

Do they actually taste good? I know this is stupid but in cartoons sardines are always joked about how nasty they are, but I'm honestly considering implementing them into my diet.

Are they tasty? What recipes are good?

sardines are tasty on their own, they're usually packed in some kind of sauce which is palatable imo. have them on toast if you must have them with something

It's usually anchovies that are joked about tasting like shit. I love sardines but they make me burp a ton for about 3 hours after eating them unfortunately, and they're nasty burps too

I ate them for the fist time the other day and thought they smelt like a fishmeal plant. Last night I ate them again and thought they were good.

digits confirm that canned food is gross and should only be consumed by poors
i don't get why nobody is also concerned about heavy metals leaking from the can i wouldn't be surprised if the plastic coating is to prevent this

You should be more worried about BPA, the coating, if anything. There's not much metal leaching going on.

I mostly eat canned sardines, but I should look for some fresh sardines sometime, that looks real frickin tasty. Canned isn't great for cooking, you can make it work but I imagine the fresh sardines are just the breasts.

Be wary of canned oysters, fren. The oils they're packed in are usually the worst.

The still use cottonseed oil a lot of the time - the single worst oil for heart health.

What are those canned in? Are they drained? Most cans packed in oil that I see are like 220 cal drained.

Was watching the Dr. Berg youtube vids on the best fish to eat, and he said that large amounts of sardines and mackerel could be eaten every single day forever, with no fear of heavy metal poisoning. Unlike all other species of fish.

Ideally it'd be from a glass jar or fresh from the store, but if a tin is all that's available it's not too bad.

My sardines aren't from the Algerian coast though, moron. I didn't see what area the sardines in your second link were from, but all the metal values seemed to be at safe levels for someone of my age and health.

          Anonymous

none of the levels are safe for daily consumption
          >My sardines aren't from the Algerian coast though
the point of that study was to illustrate that small coastal fish are worse for absorbing heavy metals not to indict the algerian coast, moron
to the extent that you're concerned about heavy metals in the sea, and you should be, you should limit the intake of fish like sardines

the point of the second study was to demostrate how cans leak particularly cans with acidic sauces like tomato sauce
you're too stupid to even get what they're about

            >the point of that study was to illustrate that small coastal fish are worse for absorbing heavy metals not to indict the algerian coast, moron
No, that wasn't the explicit aim of the study, but it's one of the conclusions you may draw from the study. I'll just leave this excerpt from the article
            >In sardine, Hg contamination level was slightly higher than in swordfish in our study, this can be explained by the fact that sardine is a species that lives near the coasts where marine pollution is very high
I'm not arguing that sardines are more or less dangerous than other types of fish, though. I'm saying the sardines I eat are safe. And don't worry, I only eat sardines about twice a month.

            >the point of the second study was to demostrate how cans leak particularly cans with acidic sauces like tomato sauce
No, their results actually went against this.
            >Safta et al. (2020) [39], [...] determined elevated iron concentrations in tomato sauce-conserved sardines, which they attributed to the iron leaching from cans, provoked by the acidity and salt content in uncoated or flawed coated areas
            >in comparison, our study found consistent amounts in both tomato sauce and oil groups
            >An analysis by De Mello Lazarini et al. (2019) [19] quantified iron in samples preserved in oil and tomato sauce, with a detection range of 1.117 to 3.477 mg/84 g in oil-preserved samples and 1.26 to 3.528 mg/84 g in tomato sauce-preserved samples, in agreement with our findings
I admit I only skimmed through the articles, but you should the articles more thoroughly before posting them. Also, I only eat sardines in oil, either way.

Again, coating/no coating is a big factor, as well as quality of coating. Maybe if the authors of the second link tried damaging the coating on purpose, they could see higher leaching
            >you're too stupid to even get what they're about
I wrote my master thesis on metal ion leaching from prosthetic implants, so I think I know the basics.

              >No, their results actually went against this.
You're wrong reread it they even say acidity is likely why the metals leech.

                Anonymous

See the attached figure. It makes sense for more metal ions to leach in a more acidic environment, but the difference isn't very large between oil (SO) and tomato (ST) sauce in this study. Look at barium for example (I worked with barium for my master, fittingly), much higher barium leaching is detected from supplier P in the SO group, and barium solubility is highly pH-dependent. Coating or not, coating integrity, geographic food source, and the quality of food regulations are all important factors you ignore here. I trust the food regulations of my country more than Brazil's.
