On one hand it seems to work in cases like Japan and Denmark, then again those places also have other reasons they curbed obesity, Im not American but I know the infrastructure there's different and things like cycling/walking/public transport are used less than common car traffic, and I do agree with in that us healthy people shouldn't suffer the price hike for the occasional snack/cheat meal all because of the lards so it'd be a case by case basis on wether it'd work/how people would react, I think as well in those places it's been implemented people eat unhealthy crap less often so paying a bit more might not be a problem since it's a rare treat, but take places like the US (or the UK for that matter if you've seen secret eaters) and I could see people who's diet is largely made up of this stuff to throw a big (pun intended) protest

Great idea, since there's a universally agreed upon collection of 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' foods that the government will be able to unproblematically find and follow, with no lobbying or special interests involved. Lol, who's definition of 'unhealthy' do you think they'll use? The vegans' definition, and raise taxes on chicken and salmon? The ketoschizos', and raise taxes on potatoes and rice? The Peatards', and raise taxes on bread? The sneed oilers', and raise taxes on some random collection of vegetable oils? The food industry's, and raise taxes on whole fruits and veggies? My guess is, they'd follow some random combination of these that will result in the only 'healthy,' untaxed foods being tofu, peanut butter, olive oil, white sugar, and soft drinks produced specifically by the coca-cola company. good luck on your cut, moron!

Unhealthy products with alien sounding ingredients are cheaper than simpler alternatives. The same company making potato chips with a laundry list of ingredients including seed oils, canola oil, and any number of seasonings and anti caking agents will sell a product that contains only potatoes, olive/avocado oil, and salt for 3x the price. The point is to price people out of real food. The US is utterly fricked.

No, the government is bloated, wasteful and doesn’t need more money. Just criminalize fatness, it’s literally that simple. If your BMI is over 25 (overweight) and you don’t have abs, you get fined, if it’s over 30 (obese) and you can’t show abs, you get sent to a mandatory fasting and labor camp until you’re a healthy weight. I’d also be willing to accept a basic fitness test (i.e. run 3 miles in 24 minutes) if you want to prove you’re fit but you just don’t look like it.

Beef is 20 minimum for custom weight steaks and out the ass for discounted cheaper cuts so it doesn't go bad. It's also expensive as all shit and is more something they do for steakhouses with 12oz 16oz etc.

More than half the cow is something a steakhouse would sell, the rest is for people who can cook a chuck roast better than some moron with a grill or pan and online recipes.

Saving healthcare money by making people healthy is a non starter.
Healthcare expenses are always highest at the end of anyone's life. The older you get, the more cost you incur
It would be more economical to make everyone take up smoking and heavy drinking when they near retirement so they die shortly after 65

That’s not accurate. Healthcare costs are highest for chronic disease patients who for example are treated for problems with obesity throughout their lives for 20-30 years until their body gives out. And having someone start smoking or drinking shortly before retirement won’t help. It often takes a decade or more for people to die from that. And during that time they drain medical resources

Fat people should be taxed. You should be punished for being fat and at a certain weight it should be a criminal offense where you are put in prison and given no food until you're skinny.
Frick these gays trying to punish everyone else. I will drink and eat whatever I want

Wheatpeasants are more buff than ricepeasants, i expect an answer as to what mechanism allows such gains and why also africans have to swat flies while white Black folk are forced to pit up with their incessant Black africanisms.

    its only good in theory
in reality the government would extend the tax to other foods it deems bad, eg dairy and meat

Sure we should, but ~~*they*~~ will just end up taxing meat as soon as the precedent is set.

It is for now, but there has been a political push against meat for awhile. They are coming for meat as soon as they can.

I hope you're right, but a lot of countries are already taking action against their meat industries.

Sure. "Sin Taxes" have been proven to work.

But how about taking a step back and simply reducing the number of government subsidies that benefit farmers? Get rid of all the shit promoting corn production, which results in ridiculously cheap corn syrup, which ends up in everything.

Food should probably cost at least double what it currently does in the United States.

I doubt taxing soda will make any difference. Those fatties will just spend their extra $2/day and not notice a difference.

no because who determines what's healthy?

sugar is perfectly fine source of energy, even preferential to most other carb sources in most circumstances. eventually the world will realize they were duped into demonizing sugar. unfortunately that probably won't happen in my lifetime.

first they came for the alcohol, and nobody said anything. then they came for the tobacco, and nobody said anything. then they came for the sugar, and still nobody said nothing. next they'll come for the meat, but who will be left to defend at that point?

    >Should unhealthy fdood be taxed more to dissuade people from buying it?

The only thing that should be taxed more is people who have children. People who create more useless eaters should have to pay double income tax.
Also, welfare and social services should only be for people who don't have children.

The gibs system is designed completely backwards. The system rewards people who have no discernment.

Gibs should only be for adults without children whose parents failed them (the reason why they are on gibs in the first place).

    >Punishing the whole for the sins of the few: The Post
As a Fatty, I take it unkindly to punish the normies and the fit for my shitty habits. Also we're fricking taxed enough already as it is in North America. Europeans don't fricking eat anything bust dust and sand imported from the middle east, africa and china. applying this tax in africa is fricking moronic and would only incite a new wave of conflicts and rise of new warlords. South America? taxing a continent that is already being taxed/robbed of everything is just begging for a new set of free helicopter rides businesses to pop up.
asia? they can't fricking afford rice, let alone sugary stuff. a nice flat 0 income made with that tax. may as well wipe your ass with the bill paper the tax proposal is written on, homosexual. South-East Pacific? you're just going to be called a cun, get taken the piss out of on a multinational scale and be told to pound outback sand.
