      >They have a billion people of course it'll be a low percentage
      Um... that's not how percentages work you stupid little brown c**t. The graph shows the % of the country with gym memberships not total numbers.

      IMO the reason it's so low is poverty. I'm guessing most Jeet communities can't afford to build gyms, let alone afford a membership in one. Poverty also makes surveying impossible, good luck getting stats from slums with 13.8 million. Literally you've got slums in India with higher populations than Sweden.

      The biggest issue though is calories, most Indians can't get enough calories to keep breathing let alone enough that would allow recreational fitness.

      Other factor is culture. Why lookmax when you can rape / request bobs on Facebook.

      Let:
      > G = {"Gym-going adult citizens of country c"},
      > A = {"Adult population of country c"}.
      where
      > G⊆A.
      Furthermore, gym membership adoption rate is given by:
      > r(c) = |G|/|A| * 100%.
      For simplicity's sake, c is an element of the set of all country names.

      Due to an event happening tommorow, say WW3, it is now mandatory for all adult males in India to visit gyms, which would be around half of the adult population.

      Going by most human population's gender makeup (ratio for India is roughly 50%, 907 females to 1000 males). By policy, females are banned from going. Thus:
      > |G| ≈ 0.5 * |A|.
      We gather:
      > r(India) ≈ (0.5 * |A|) / |A| * 100% = 50%.

      Assuming Egypt, with a much lower population, decided to stay neutral, foregoing the temple of iron. Then:
      > r(India) > r(Egypt) <=> 50% > 1.2%
      where r(Egypt) = 1.2% can be found in our data.

      Thus, it becomes apparent that gym membership adoption rate r, is not influenced solely by population size. I hope you learned something about ratios anon.

      I think you may have meant to say that |G| and |A| are dependent each other, once |A| has reached a certain population threshold.

      Post a formal mathematical proof on that statement, I am interested. Please define Y as a set. If you construct
      > |G| |A| |Y|
      I am certain your proof will be complete.

      Good luck anon.

        Did you really write all that just to explain how percentages work?
        Are you sure you're not being disingenous since he obviously only brought up how india has "like a billion people" to imply confounding factors like poverty

          I'm a homosexual, flaunting brainlet, anon.
          Forgive me.

          I wanted to prove his statement wrong, but went from random variables to economic factors then in anger wrote that explanation to stroke my ego. Once I tried to relate exponential population growth to a probability of that population being realized I gave up.

          Also, I'm schizo.

        You forgot to construct the following

        >I = {"Internet using adult population"}
        >E = {"Elephant population of the country"}
        >R = {"moron population of the country"}
        From which you can complete your argument to construct
        >|N| |I| |G| |G| |E| |R|

      Ironically the number of overweight people is declining in the US because they've been graduating to obese. Progress is progress.

    • 6 months ago
      Anonymous

      The US has the most extreme disparity of disgusting, obese sharters and beautiful people that look chiseled from stone of any country that has ever existed and likely will ever exist. Some of the guys in my gym are normal looking and healthy boomers, some fatties and pawgs but there are a shit ton of guys under 45-ish who look like sculptures of Roman gods, very IST and good looking girls that could mog "influencers", way more so than when I'm out and about irl.

      I think the obese people have some undiagnosed pathology. Not merely overweight but obese, they don't go to gyms to do much of anything besides wagecuck (poorly) and consoom.

      • 6 months ago
        Anonymous

        >45-ish who look like sculptures of Roman gods
        This is utter cope. Obesity is the rule, every age group, every gender. If we had the type of diversity you describe where there is a huge number of ultra-fit and a much larger group of obese people, you'd see obesity at levels equivalent to most western countries (that's how stats work) and that's not what we see, we see in the comparative data that the US is an extreme outlier compared to other western countries.

        So again, why more memberships when the US is the fastest on that list (if we exclude Mexico).

        This, the USA has one of the biggest gym/fitness cultures in the world, I think part of it is due to Hollywood and part of it is people wanting to fight against the American drive to make everyone a fat useless frick.

        A lot of other countries don't have lifting cultures, if you go to gyms in Japan most of them look like the gyms you'd find in a hotel lobby, but Japan is one of the skinniest countries on Earth.

          With some exceptions, the higher the obesity rate the higher the gym attendance rate. You have France, Italy, Japan and such, very skinny people who never do sports. Then you have USA, UK, ie. fat people who work out a lot.

          Only rarely do you find "lots of gym goers who are lean" like in Scandinavia.

        It's not really true statistically, it's like only 1/4 of the coastal states are disgusting and obese compared to 1/3 of flyover. You just go places where people are less fat, where fitness and lifestyle is important.

      • 6 months ago
        Anonymous

        >On the coasts there is a big gym culture
        I'm almost certain there's a cultural explanation for it. I suspect it's probably a combination of gym culture and delusion (eg a higher proportion of people that think a gym membership will cure their obesity, as opposed to diet and increased activity).

        • 6 months ago
          Anonymous

          i.e. they are signing up and not going/abandoning. It might also have to do with the culture within gyms e.g. people rocking up regularly and not doing any exercise, just watching tiktok etc.

          No fricking idea, but interesting.

    Makes sense.

    Nordic countries, especially Sweden and Norway are very "compliant" nations. They always like doing things right. Bet they have some of the highest vaccination rates as well. If the government said hopping on one leg was good for you Swedes would all go around hopping on one leg.

    USA makes sense because there's a heavy focus on appearances there and gym culture is a part of that. Bet the use of steroids in the US dwarfs use of them in Sweden showing the difference.

    I would have expected Australia to be higher, Australians have always put an emphasis on muscles surely - UK really higher than Australia surprises me.

    India LOL.

    By law every country has to have a small percentage of extremely ripped Indians and Asians just to buck the trend.

    In Sweden there are tax benefits for giving employees money for fitness activities.

    So most companies give each employee enough to buy a yearly gym card at a cheap chain.

    Since it's "free" most people will sign up, but it says nothing about the actual use....

    Although many people do excersise here. Probably because it's pitch black and cold for like 6 months per year so you need some sort of a cope.
