Skinny fat - cut or bulk first?

Age old question, I know. But if my body fat is too high and my muscle is too low, should I cut for a bit then bulk once ~10% BF?

10% bodyfat is really, really lean dude. Magazine cover lean. You can go either way when skinnyfat. Would you rather be a twink or be builtfat for a while? Answering that question gives you your answer

Fpbp. If you're natty it'll take 2 years minimum before your aesthetics go anywhere, you just decided whether to cut or bulk first. Pros of cutting are that you'll see progress faster and twinkmode isn't gross when shirtless. Pros of bulking are that you'll look good in clothing and lifts will increase very linearly

All you skinny fat gays only care about is abs and women so cut 1st. There's nothing wrong with only caring about aesthetics and women; just be upfront about it.
It's clear you don't care about size, strength or bodybuilding. You don't have the dedication nor the patience to achieve picrel.
Cut until you reach 10% or until you hate your life.

True skinnyfats need to just recomp. Why? Because a skinnyfat person is skinny because he has literally no muscle, so whenever he just looks at iron, he is going to be building his base. Its gonna be so fricking easy to put muscle if you have never played sports in your youth etc. And secondly, the "fat" part comes from the fact that you are yes, fat. You are most likely well over 20% bodyfat. You dont need to bulk when you are 20% bodyfat. You are fat. You have enough fat and energy to build muscle.

You cant go wrong with cutting first but I wouldnt suggest an elaborate ifbb pro cutting program for someone that is beginner and just starting out. Its not gonna be fun lifting on a calorie deficit and quite frankly its not needed as you are not cutting to get stage ready. You will recomp and transform your body so fricking quickly when you start eating at maintenance or like ever so slight deficit and you start building muscle and burning fat and even if you dont burn fat your bodyfat% goes down because your muscle mass increases.

You will see so much faster gains and look better so much faster if you recomp/cut first. Like this guy said its realistically gonna take you 2-3 years to be kind of aestethic. Obviously this is very relative and subjective but still. Like imagine you are 25% bodyfat and you start bulking and you just totally let your body go. You are gonna look like fricking shit and fat in clothes for the next 2-3 years?? For what? Its not like you are gonna be 10x bigger when you cut doing that route. The route leads to basically the exact same end goal whether you cut first or not. But if you cut first you can spend that 2-3 years at athletic bodyfat and look good all the time.

If youre a beginner lift, and eat your bodyweight in protein, and CUT slightly for a while. Your frame needs room, get the fat out of the way so your muscles can be packed on.

the bulk meme was always just for rail thin teens, if you are an adult man and skinnyfat, do what I said. If you try to bulk you will literally have zero motivation or incentive to keep going.

I agree, I was 20%bf (measured with caliper + tape) and decided to cut until reaching 17%, then bulked a bit doing SL 5x5 for about 4 months. All this in ablout 10 months.
Stopped a month ago because doing PPL and cutting again for summer. Gained 2 kilos during bulking but now going down. It's easy for me being 1,68m.

Cut. The lowe your bf the better you can bulk because a) you aromatize less (which also reduces gyno risk) and b) you're more sensitive to insulin

Are you overweight? Be honest. There's two types of skinnyfat; skinny and fat. Fat skinnyfat is the most common. You know you're fat skinnyfat if your BMI is classified as overweight or normal borderline overweight -> cut
If your BMI is underweight you need to bulk first.

Don't skip cardio, which btw shouldn't be some boring walking around shit. Do HIIT

I don't see the point in cutting if you don't have any muscle. You think if you just lose the fat you will end up skinny but if you have zero muscle mass and definition you will look soft and skinnyfat even if you lose a lot of fat, until you reach complete auschwitzmode. As a skinnyfat I would lift and eat at maintenance and do that as long as I can make strength gains and then assess the situation again once I stall.

The answer is always cut. Honestly as long as you get your protein you can recomp (aka lean bulk). Bulk/cut trade off only applies to sub 15% body fat people.

  19. 4 weeks ago

You OWN a bulk. You been eating like shit for too long.
Amend your sins and cut, till 13%15% (10 is super low) but keep that protein up, then bulk. SLOW bulk you fat frick you, till 18%+/- anything beyond that it's useless

Cut carbs, count calories, and train consistently to failure. I do PPL 5x a week (so days rotate) and I try to stay always under 15% body fat. Small cuts here and there. Eat mostly protein. Generally always in a 500 calorie deficit or surplus.

Could go on about training but diet and consistency is #1. Stay motivated. I personally love gym bunnies so that keeps me going.

    Always cut first.
    Always.
Skinny/lean will always look better than the bulky/fluffy look. Only pothead fat b***hes "like" the bulky/fluffy because it makes them feel less threatened.
Once you get lean, then focus on steadily putting on muscle and doing mini cuts to maintain a good figure.

the issue with cutting as a skinny fat beginner is that you most likely have nothing to cut down to (no muscle). there's also a good chance your metabolism is fricked up from low muscle mass, lack of exercise and shitty diet, so trying to cut is going to be extremely difficult. bulking isn't the best idea either obviously because you do have excess fat on you and you don't really want to build more on top of that. the way I see it, you shouldn't do either one. all you need to do is start training regularly and eating healthier. don't worry too much about overall caloric intake. most people will probably trim down a bit just by doing this alone. you'll also gain strength and size as a beginner no matter what and after a couple months of this your metabolism should be fixed up, you'll be used to regular exercise and you'll have a good idea of how to perform your lifts and all that sort of stuff. that's when you can decide to cut or bulk (probably cut but it depends on how skinny fat you actually are).
