Diet can be different but at the end of the day if they met their protein goal they should've been bigger, but that's just natty lifting.
When I started at age 15 in my first 3 years I accomplished which I could easily have done in 1 year or so if I re did it. Proper strength program before bulking, proper calorie counting and a solid surplus, proper nutrition, pushing myself properly and mroe rest. It's just how it is. No one is going to start out great unless they have like a parent whose done it but yeah. Most people start their first year or two just lifting with their bros after school or in the garage not even knowing proper form or routine or diet for a while until they find someone to teach them, and they're lucky if that person even knows wtf they're doing, or they find a site like this and can distinguish what's garbage shit posts and what isn't.

i'm the 8 years guy in the op pic, and actually in term of training, I think I was doing pretty ok even at the start because there are so much infos online. the part where I did absolutely shit for probably the first 6 years was nutrition, I didn't pay attention to it (i just ate whatever my mom cooked) i started taking care of it the past 2 years and I feel like i've done more progress in those 2 years than before

The main problem I experienced in my many years of lifting was the periods of time when I was recovering from injuries or simply taking long breaks due to life circumstances. Of course, lost gains are always easy to recover thanks to muscle memory, but just think of how much time has accumulated when I've lost gains and had to recover them, it's probably several years that I've spent just to get back to the same place I was before.
