Soreness in weight lifting - what's normal?

Some weightlifters claim that you should only be sore for the first 3-4 workouts. Some weightlifters claim you should be sore every workout, forever. Both claim that the other is doing it wrong. Obviously, there are plenty of opinions in between as well.

What's your thoughts gentlemen?

I'm talking about DOMS by the way.

    soreness will happen depending on many factors. novel stimulus (different exercises, more sets, more reps, more weight), hydration, nutrition, stress, the list goes on.

    for instance, I had not had much chest soreness for a long time, but then I tried increasing my range of motion on dumbbell presses, and now I could hardly train arms the next because of the insane soreness

    I don't think there's a way it's supposed to be. The only thing that matters is that you should be able to differentiate between muscle soreness and other types of pain, which any non-moronic person should be able to do. Generally DOMS will go away over time, but I don't see a point in worrying about when or how quickly. If you're making progress with your program, that's all that matters.

    In my experience, if you arent sore, you didn't tear enough muscle. Want to feel sore? Isolate a muscle you don't use very often.

    highly dependent on genetics, diet, age, etc.
    After about 3 months of lifting I stopped getting that serious, walking funny the next day, DOMS.
    I may get a little stiff, but not DOMS.
    I also eat a LOT of food, I just do cardio. Both food and cardio can offset DOMS.

    Some soreness after most workouts is pretty normal. But feeling real sore only happens if I really push myself. But I also work construction so I am perpetually sore.
