You need to challenge your muscles for them to grow. When you started doing pullups you most likely went until you physically could not do another reap. When you were doing lat pulldowns you probably just went until it felt painful enough to feel good about stopping even if your muscles could keep going. Many such cases.
You might want to do high reps of lat pulldowns after doing pullups by the way.

im not sure if theyre a "fraud" but I agree the def dont work as well as real chinups.

However, I did successfully use lat pulls to increase the rom on my chins. Whereas previsouly I caould barely pull myself up to the chin, during a fat phase I did lat pull downs with a weight starting to where I could pull the bar down to my clavicle, and aded weight from there. Once I deieted down and got lean enough to do proepr chinbups ahain, my rom was much better. I could chin myself to the clavicle or sternum, no problem.

So they have a place, but if you can do legit chinups/pullups, those are superior.

literally the opposite for me, my lats exploding switching to close grip lat pull downs. Full stack repping 295lbs on lat pull downs while my weighted pull ups were at 115lb for 3. Fix your grip and make sure you're pulling with your elbows.

    > fraud?

No but anecdotal experience is that pull-ups work better for growth. It’s my own experience and I heard that from multiple top level bodybuilding trainers

once you understand how to use your back to pull via pullups, pulldowns become much better. same relationship exists with bench press and cable flyes

No, merely regular pull ups are basically an S Tier exercise.

Bodyweight exercises are objectively superior. We've known this for years. And the body prefers movements that involve several muscle groups at once because that's how it's designed. We aren't robots. Pullups are important for fighting wrestling, and archery too. Lat pulldowns are for bodybuilders and fat people. Both are u healthy

i started doing them with neutral grip ( 4 sets of 6, twice a week), and its fricking great.

really lets you hold the position at the top for a full second.

    >lat pulldown: machine queen. Full stack isn’t even heavy because normalgay machine
    >weighted pullups: humans literally cannot ignore a hulking beast swinging himself with plates clanging off his nuts
weighted pullups are almost as based as esoteric lifts like jefferson curls and neck curls

I've always been bad at pullups but I used to be able to do a decent amount of chinups, 9-10 per set at 82kg/180lbs. I lost a lot of progress over the course of almost two years when I stopped going as frequently and when I did I never really pushed myself, I've gotten my lifting back on track as of late but chinup/pullup progress has more or less stagnated around 4-5 reps per set. I should start doing them more often, I've neglected them as of late in favor of more fun exercises where I see more progress.

They're a complementary exercise at best.
