Why early bodybuilders didn't trained chest?

      Anonymous

      because it looks way better
i tore my rotator cuff 8 months ago and havent been able to do basically any chest exercise since. and funnily enough i much prefer my physique now, it really helped to get rid of that puffy droopy gyno look. Smaller, chiseled chest looks WAY better unless you have godly genetics and insertions.

If you have gynos it certainly wasn't because of training

that wasnt the main takeaway. basically nobody has actual gyno. 99,999% of "gynos" posted here are not gyno, i typed it out mostly as a meme. the point was puffy/droopy chest which absolutely is from training as i have stopped and it has gone down. people who hypertrophy their chest, have bigger chest.

This is true only if you're fat. I'm at like 20%bf and since I started benching the countour of my chest's popping up, but also pushing my chest fat downward and outward, giving me a gyno look

Early gyms were focused on athletism, not looks. They didn't consider the scenarion of a perfectly symetrical tree falling on you in a lying position. They were focusing on thing like lifting shit above your head. Like when you need to load that bag of good in the cabin, etc.

In terms of functional every day moving I'd say chest is used the least. Even if you're pushing a heavy object you're most likely using your legs to do it

Pressing used to be as popular as benching is today. Then all the competitions got rid of pressing because it was difficult to judge and so the bench took its place. I encourage everyone to replace benching with OHP.

Sandow was trying to emulate the proportions of Greek/Roman and renaissance statues.

Early gyms were focused on athletism, not looks. They didn't consider the scenarion of a perfectly symetrical tree falling on you in a lying position. They were focusing on thing like lifting shit above your head. Like when you need to load that bag of good in the cabin, etc.

      >They didn't consider the scenarion of a perfectly symetrical tree falling on you in a lying position.
Yet they recommended movements like a pushup to train the chest and barbell curls to train the biceps. The also did deadlift which is where you lift a perfect object for one to grab onto that is perfectly even to lift off the ground in an extremely specific way that you'll never really pick up most objects. This obsession with
      >athletism
in modern brainlets is missing the reality of why one lifts weights in the first place. You lift weights to provide stimulus for muscle grow which translates to improved strength in other activities. The motion you do during weight training does not matter in either regard so long as it effectively stimulates your muscles to grow so that you can get the benefits of bigger and stronger muscles. The best motions are the ones which allow you to focus entirely on the target muscle groups without any additional nonsense. The Bench Press is a decent chest, anterior delt, and triceps builder and far superior to any previously used exercises which is why it became much more popular than pushups and the floor press. And since Nautilus and later machine manufacturers, now we have the machine press, pec dec, etc. which are even more affective at targeting the those muscle since they are designed to exactly utilize the function of those muscles and nothing else.

You only get improvements in athleticism relative to your chosen sport when you're directly practicing for that sport. I.e. playing a practice game of baseball with a coach if you're a baseball player, training BP, Squat, and DL if you're a powerlifter, or doing sprint interval training if you're a sprinter.

Nah having some chest isn't that bad. The problem begins when your chest is massively bigger than every other muscle, then yeah it looks weird and goofy. Same as with any other muscle but probably with chest happens more because it's easier to train.
