swimming is a great way to burn calories

      no. it really isnt.

swim for an hour every day

i just came back from this. it takes me rougly 30-40 minutes to swim a mile, which burns roughly 500 calories at my weight. i could run 5 miles in the same amount of time and burn far more.

crawl is a funny descriptor. it's called freestyle

it is called both freestyle and front crawl. i assumed you were british

It's called front crawl. Freestyle means you can use any stroke you want and they all do front crawl because it's the quickest.

swimming gives me a deep feeling of meditative like calm and a nice full body mini pump. however, its not great for slicing and dicing.

There’s likely your issue. First of all, that’s pretty slow. Your essentially doing the old people mile-in-morning swim, which is very healthy, but not ideal for cutting.
        Efficient swimming is about HIIT.
If you’d do your mile in a two laps normal/slow pace and two laps max speed pattern without ever taking a break, you’d feel the heart gainz, the cardio and you will shed weight like crazy.
Competitive swimmers have to eat insane amounts of calories per day for maintaining.

i may try switching up my tempo. sprint there slow back or what you said. its tough to do switch tempo since i have to share lanes with sometimes up 5 other people and i just end up wanting to drown them for getting in my way. i wonder if ill not be able to keep it up for the same amount of time

            Anonymous

I understand your pain, slow lanes are very annoying. In summer I prefer swimming in lakes but it can also help to figure out ideal times at the pool.
When I went to college, I’d always go swimming during lunchtime but that wouldn’t work with the job I have now.

Yes, but you also cannot pretend to be a dolphin or whale while doing so.

        >i could run 5 miles in the same amount of time and burn far more.
That depends on how often you run. If you're running five miles daily then your body is conditioned for it and you're probably burning close to zero extra calories during the actual run. They're just built into your TDEE at that point and your body will burn them if you go for a run or sit at home. Obviously if you stopped running for a prolonged period of time, that would fade, but if the goal is burning extra calories rotating in new workouts is more efficient.

and what exactly powers the leg muscles for a run?

That study on the TDEE of African hunter-gatherers was bullshit and pure fattycope fuel.
As as species we're built to walk a frickton so it's no wonder we can get really efficient at it. If this wasn't the case our ancestors would have starved foraging berries and tracking wabbits.
For hunter-gatherers (and us as a species) walking is their natural state of being, it's NOT exercise.
This "überadaptation" does not extend to rooning. Rooning by definition will always be taxing to us.

        Anonymous

Tracking apps are unreliable as frick but 500 cals in 30 minutes is a lot. At that pace you should run out of glycogen in 1~ hour, specially if you're running on a deficit and not carb loading hard.
Also in terms of burning calories, not chillin the frick out makes a BIG difference. Next time play "the pool's bottom has AIDS and the walls are coated with giardia". You're either treading water upright, swimming your ass off or resting by swimming backstroke.

ALSO, even if (you)'re more efficient at burning cals with rooning, with swimming you can spread fatigue among several muscle groups so you can conceivably go for longer.

i may try switching up my tempo. sprint there slow back or what you said. its tough to do switch tempo since i have to share lanes with sometimes up 5 other people and i just end up wanting to drown them for getting in my way. i wonder if ill not be able to keep it up for the same amount of time

        You can either
        >slow dow your roll
Impromptu drills like kicking only or closed-fist strokes.
Work on your weak points / weakest styles.
        Wear a baggy t-shirt.

        or
        >overtake them
Turn around so you're now leading the pack.
Get your underwater on point (CAREFUL BEING OVERTAKEN THIS WAY MOGS THE FRICK OUT OF PEOPLE)

        >wear paddles and/or short fins and swim laps with the sweaty compgays (love me short fins)

There’s likely your issue. First of all, that’s pretty slow. Your essentially doing the old people mile-in-morning swim, which is very healthy, but not ideal for cutting.

Depends on your intensity, but HIIT swimming helped me get to 13% (pic related).

are you flexing in that pic? also i prefer cycling. but i like all three of the triathalon legs

        Anonymous

Yes, they are contracted. I can see the outline when unflexed, but they are still not as defined. I still have some fat on my inner thighs and ass to lose before getting them defined unflexed.
I cycle on sunny days and swim on rainy days. I don't run since I hate running

good note. im trying to estimate my own bf% from your pic. im really losing steam on my cut and i need to get my head back in the game.

            Anonymous

People really underestimate the amount of fat they are carrying and I've really understood this now. I had A LOT of fat on my ass and legs.
The only downside of cutting to low bf% is that it's unironically painful to sit down on hard surfaces. I need to use two small pillows on my chair when sitting in front of my pc.

Swimming may not be the "most time efficient" way of burning calories but if you're serious about your goals chances are you're already at maximum capacity for the amount of fatigue you can put on your legs from running and cycling. S swimming is necessary to get more aerobic volume without snapping a tendon in your knees

    >swimming is not a time efficient way to burn calories.
1- Not true. Swimming mobilizsprety much your entire body, so you're burning calories and also doing some "lifting", soi's good for peoplewho wan to be fit.
Proof :Look at the body of swimmers, hey look good and that's wthout lifting weights, just swimming
2- Swimming is actually the best way to lose weight for people who are super-obese, because they are not destroying their knees because hey don't have all the weight of their fat bodies crushing their joints.

Swimming is one of the best things you can add to your workouts, as cardio.or whatever.

Only Black folk don't know how to swim and therefore I summize OP is a Black person (and homosexual obvously).

      1. shorter, more intense workouts

      2. indoor pool. cold water makes you hangery.

alternatively you can go balls to the wall for long enough that you want to puke your guts out. essentially a mini marathon. takes a good 2 days of rest to recover so I'd only do it once every two weeks. even once a month if you're an oldgay.

look at this homosexual trying to go against millennia of knoledge about sports. Swimming is the SSS tier sport to burn calories and workout your full body. No other form of sport comes even close.
Of course, swimming requires MUCH more skill than just going to run or jumping rope, since there are a lot of movements and techniques you have to perform correctly. But once you master the art, you can have a really good body and level of fitness just by swimming.
