Swimming update

Hey guys. I’m the anon in the pic and I wanted to tell you guys that I just finished my first swimming session. The pool was mostly full of old people. Once I told them I was a beginner they were pretty respectful and told me that there’s no shame in trying. There was also a life guard who saw I was struggling and gave me some tips. I couldn’t get the hang of floating but I spent an hour getting accustomed to having my head underwater, breathing properly and kicking with a board. I feel confident enough to go back whenever. Sorry for the blog post but hopefully anyone else with anxiety around trying new things feels empowered. Because I was honestly dreading this day.

I feel like not teaching your kids how to swim should be punishable by law. It's like not teaching your kids to ride a bike.

      >It's like not teaching your kids to ride a bike.
I think it's worse, personally. Ridding a bike usually won't kill you, but imagine falling into a body of water that rises just above your head with no current, and fricking drowning.

    >I couldn’t get the hang of floating
This will be more difficult for you, especially if you are athletic. Fat is somewhat less dense than water, while muscle is denser, and bones in blacks (of western african heritage mostly) are denser than in whites, while the usual body proportions (long limbs, short torso) is also disadvantageous. Dont let predispositions discourage you, however. Swimming is loads of fun, and as you said, it's great low impact exercise. It's my personal favourite activity, to the point I feel more at home in the water than on land.

So I guess in terms of safety, my best bet is to focus on my ability to tread water?

        Anonymous

Pretty much, yeah, as it is for anyone. Relying on floating can be dangerous, as depending on the body of water (mostl salinity, for example pool or lake vs sea), your BF%, or even the temperature of the water can impact it a lot. Treading water is a much more useful skill.

      Only in America.

In reality, Euopean WOMEN have denser bones than US black males. You guys are all chronically sick by Euro standards.

what? all the benefits of being black but with a strong asian background

I think Blasian sounds like a pretty based combo, I've actually been thinking about making a thread on some other board about what race the non-Asian parent needs to be or what attributes he needs to have in order for hapa sons to not get fricked over like Asian guys. Mind telling us a little bit about your experience being Blasian? What's the Asian background of that parent?

        Anonymous

Not him, but in Canada the few blasian play sports like basketball, and football which I think helps a lot with socialization. and status, though I’d don’t think their parents stayed together for long. From my viewpoint they’re basically just like Filipinos and other jungle Asian types.

He's not acting like a Black person. More than likely he's a disciplined young man trying to improve. Racists actually get along better with other races than anti racist loons. Also if you can't handle naughty words you're mentally deficient and should just do the world a favor and stay quiet.

good job bro. let me give you some advice as a late-30s anon - people only tend to hate on you when you have a problem and aren't trying to solve it. if you're showing that you're trying to solve the problem, people will usually be kind and supportive. in other words, it's not the problem that people mock, it the unwillingness to address it that bothers them. if you think about it it's kind of a smart evolutionary trait for our species to have.

good on ya anon, keep at it

as other anons say, once you can swim in nature or the sea its so fricking nice, just take it slow

re treading water, i would say practice floating on your back and kicking before you try and tread water vertically, its less effort

I learned to swim properly when I was 30. I took lessons at a local pool. I was the only white person for miles. The instructor was some old black b***h that probably survived slavery and went on to become a swim teacher once she earned her freedom. She was a stern, no-nonsense kind of woman that deep down was nice but would rarely show it. She always said shit like
    > c'mon now I ain't got all day
    > whatchu doin over there this stop playing
    > yes that's right yessuh
Anyway, it was kind of kino. I didn't feel any shame about my age and now I can freestyle pretty well. It was fun tbh.
If you can't swim find some old black woman to teach you.

You can't float well because you more than likely have denser bones and more muscle tissue than normal dudes. I'm the same way
    >inb4 I'm called Black person or whatever
I'm guaranteed whiter than (You) chuds and I have actual muh aryan genes. I mogged you homosexuals in terms of muscle and strength before I even started lifting
You'll have to adjust technique a bit. When you're in fresh water you have to swim almost at a diagonal so you stay above the water. You lose out on speed but you won't drowned. Since you can't float well then you'll have to get used to the idea of always treading water at the bare minimum. There's no chill time in fresh water. Salt water is a different story. Everyone floats well in salt water so you can be a lot more horizontal and you can swim properly in there. First time I got to swim in the ocean it was eye opening. Then when I tried a saltwater pool I decided that when I own land I have to get one because it felt like I could finally swim in a pool without having to struggle

Fellow black anon here. I’m 6’4 205 very lean and I experienced the same difficulty.

Swimming in fresh water is way more tiring, learn to tread water efficiently and you’ll be okay.

I’m so dense I can’t even float in the ocean but I can tread water way easier so it’s not taxing.

I went from barely being able to tread water to swimming from a beach to an island about 500 yards away.

My advice: Practice in fresh water (pools) and swim as much as you can in salt water (oceans, some pools).

I also found that a very slow, stretched out doggy paddle with hand sculling is a very easy way for people built like us to tread water.
Proud of you dude, keep practicing.

Don't worry about floating. I used to be a lifeguard, I've been a surfer my whole life, and I never could float in fresh water. If you have access to the ocean, I guarantee you'll easily float there. Since you're learning to swim from lessons, you won't pick up bad habits like swinging your arms out wide like everyone who wore floaties as a kid does.
