ASUS has been screwing customers over on warranty for years and years.

Lots of stories about defective hardware sent to ASUS that probably needs a component repaired but once it gets there suddenly physical damage and ASUS quotes the cost for a whole assembly/device replacement. Does management get sweet bonuses for keeping costs bare minimum? Do they have their own strict budget irrespective of how much ASUS hardware fails in the wild?

I'm surprised he missed the actual point of the extortion. He got close, but somehow failed to see what would've happened if he paid the fee. If he'd paid, they wouldn'tve fixed the device he sent in at all -- they would've just sent him a new one. Why spend all the labor replacing literally ever part? Just ship a new one.

That's also why they state not to send in the SD card and that data cannot be guaranteed. They plan to replace the whole thing. They just want you to pay some for it.

Replace all the electrolytic capacitors in electronics that matter to you with quality parts from Nichicon, Chemicon, Panasonic, or Vishay.
Look for similarly-spec'd parts from long life cap series, and you'll be much better off.

Replace ceramic disk capacitors with quality MLCC equivalents from AVX, TDK, Kemet, and Sprague. There's likely a few more reputable brands. Ceramic disk garbage is failtastic, the MLCCs from Kemet et al., will outlast all and any electrolytic a few times over. Tantalum capacitors with equivalent Kemets or whatever other brands you can find on Mouser and Digikey.

        Anonymous

No point risking damaging the thing opening it up and soldering until the caps actually go bad, not like it'd be too late to replace them at that point. Seems like a lot of newer devices are a fricking b***h to even open, last gaming monitor I opened had like 80 internal plastic clips holding the back on. Guessing they have some kind of special tool for shit like that but without it you're definitely going to be damaging the case by prying it open.

          Anonymous

Electrolytic capacitors can leak while the device still appears to be functional. The electrolyte can corrode the traces and solder joints on the PCB over time, and if left unchecked can make repairs far more difficult and time consuming when the time comes. Just ask the OG Xbox owners who didn't remove their clock capacitor in time.

I wouldn't say it's always worth preemptively replacing capacitors, but if it's a device you care about lasting a long time, it's worth at least inspecting the caps for signs of leakage or bulging once they get old enough.

qrd? I always went Asus because everything besides evga seemed like chinesium based on branding, appearance etc. Never had any issues with their mobo, GPU, or monitors so idk about the warranty issues but is it more than that?

At this point asus is like all those companies that use youtubers for marketing. ridge wallets, premade meals, better help, raid shadow legends etc. You pay for the marketing and that is probably nearly not enough money for the marketing so they have to take your money in some other way - scamming on complaints is a great place to save money.

Is it me or is this guy just now addicted to this newfound power? Like let's gather a bunch of redditors and ruin the reputation of some known brand for kicks. In my opinion homiebyte deserves more shit than ANUS. I had 3 motherboards from them shit the bed.
