This makes me so mad

Why pay for a gym membership to run on a treadmill? Go outside in the fresh air, and do it for free. Same thing with people doing pushups and stomach crunches in the gym. wtf. Do it at home.

I do other things that I can only do at the gym then I use the treadmill because it's convenient.

Treadmills are very convenient, but going to the gym isn't really convenient. I have a treadmill at home which I purchased second hand for $100 (retail value ~$1000). I propped it up on some planks of wood to increase the incline from a max of 12% to 20%. The reason I bought it was to stay fit for hiking in the summer, since I usually do rather ambitious stuff but struggle to get very fit by just going hiking 1x/week during the summer months.

You could get a dog. Not as cheap as a treadmill, but will keep.you in hiking shape all year with the bonus of more fun.

It's not motivation I need. It's that driving out to the mountains for a 3+ hour hike is not something I can do on a daily basis, nor at all in Winter. Hence the 20% incline on the treadmill. The mountains where I live are steep.

I stairmaster at the gym to get in mountain shape. I feel I need to do longer sessions as my treks up usually take 8-12 hours.

Even better, walk someone else's dogs and earn money and make a good friend but you're not responsible for it 24/7 lol

If you live in a city, running on the sidewalk is hell for your joints compared to the treadmill, though I agree I wouldn't get a gym membership just to run. is right.
      >Same thing with people doing pushups and stomach crunches in the gym. wtf. Do it at home.
      Agree.

most people in the world live in urban environments of some kind, it doesn't have to be a big city. if you walk otuside and it's mostly concrete then that's an urban environment. i would put suburbs in that category too

Why run on the gross treadmill in a sweaty humid environment, instead of exercising in the beautiful nature, with the cold weather callousing your mind and strengthening your discipline.

a treadmill lets you control variables like a constant speed, constant incline, and whatever else
    it's an excellent training tool
also unless you're trail running, running on concrete through urban environments is worse for you than being on a treadmill in a comfy gym

In principle I agree with you but there are always exceptions. For instance, I live in a shitty “diverse” neighborhood and see stray pitbabies outside looking for children to cuddle with on a daily basis, on average about three a day. If a dog comes at me while I’m outside running or doing whatever I just kick it but I get it if that’s not for everyone. With the push ups and stuff too, yeah it’s pretty gay but sometimes I just wanna throw in a set of pushups till failure after benching and there’s no reason I should wait until I get home to do it so I’ll crank them out in the group exercise rooms. It’s pretty obnoxious if someone starts doing push-ups in a power rack or right in front of the dumbbells though, that’s just shit etiquette.

I screwed my back up a few years ago and the Chiro advised against treadmills because you are not pushing forward like normal running, you are just bouncing on the spot up.

this is a very stupid post

why are you wasting emotional energy getting mad at the choices strangers make for themselves?
also there can be good reason to treadmill run. it keeps you out of the sun, it's in an air conditioned space if it's hot outside, you have complete control of the speed and incline which is good for things like heart rate training, you don't have to worry about getting lost or coming across obstacles like traffic lights/crowds/etc, the surface is softer than paths but more consistent than turf/trail. a lot of people are also on the treadmill just as a warmup or cooldown in conjunction with a complete workout. some people are there with friends, or generally socialise at the gym and are motivated by being in that atmosphere, etc. you also don't have to content with poor air quality, which in certain conditions can basically outpace the health benefits of running in the first place.

i love running outside, but for certain months of the year it's just not possible for health and safety reasons, and i'm still enough of a cardiolet that low heart rate training is extremely frustrating outdoors.
