Thoughts on melatonin?

I take it every night because I need it if I want to get super deep, restful sleep. Please offer comments, thoughts and suggestions.

I'm reading why we sleep by matt walker and apparently melatonin doesn't make you sleep any better, it just makes your body think "Oh it's night time"
The only real cases where it's actually useful is jet lag because of your circadian rythm being fricked up.

My tips that helped me get fricking perfect 9hrs sleep everyday:
    -cold room
-always wake up and fall asleep at the same times (Try to wake up when the sun comes up if possible)
-Make sure it's in sleep cycles, one cycle is 90mins, you want to wake up at the end of the cycle aka light NREM sleep so you actually feel refreshed instead of your alarm fricking you up during your dream
-this one is a bit autistic but it helped me wake up on time everyday no exceptions whether I liked it or not:
    >put phone far away from bed
    >Use alarmy app which has challenges like math problems/memory problems
    >Make alarm loud af and annoying af
    >Spend 3 minutes trying to solve 10 math problems everytime you wake up to a siren
    >Not even sleepy anymore.

-No lights 3-4 hours before bed, if you need to use electronics use night lights and low brightness

That is pretty autistic kek, but Id imagine just getting up and splashing your face with cold water + going for a 10 minute walk to be just as effective.

I guess it's autistic but it works literally everytime.

I feel groggy as hell in the morning when I use it

Melatonin makes me feel very groggy the next morning. It helps me fall asleep but not necessarily stay asleep because about half the time I wake up at 2 am wide awake and unable to fall asleep for an hour or longer.

OP it’s a hormone and taking random exogenous doses is going to have some unintended consequences especially in the long term. Don’t bother taking it unless your trying to overcome jet lag.

Frick the boomer “better living through chemistry” x consoomer mentality. If you don’t NEED it then you don’t need to take it.

Had the same problem, you're taking melatonin too close to bedtime, probably 30 mins before going to bed. Try taking it 1h-1h15 before bed
And lower the dosage to 1mg or 2mg

          5 mg

Do some research on what amount of your body produces. Compare it to the dosages of Melatonin pills.
Guys, do not frick around with your hormones! We still are mostly clueless about our own bodies and how it works.

I’ve been feeling so groggy and shitty after taking melatonin 0.5mg.

If you’re having serious insomnia then by all means take it as needed.

The best thing I’ve done for my sleep recently is doing HIT cardio, long walks and got myself a heavy ass duvet with a throw over it.

i have really bad insomnia and i take it, it took me years to start taking it due to my anti-med stances and shit but eventually bit the bullet cause nothing works, i used to say all the shit people say ITT about hormones. and i've done every single sleep hygiene thing imaginable.

i take 0.3mg every night, which is basically the dosage used in most research, anything higher is overkill and basically does nothing or only does harm, it makes me fall asleep faster most of the time, but i think it does cause me to wake up at night, usually after 4 hours of sleeping, i think it makes me dream more and may or may not make my sleep slightly less deep but its worth it if it prevents me from from a 6 am - 4pm sleep time.
sometimes it doesn't work when i feel particularly depressed and stressed, then i don't take it for a few days and itll work again.

there is some research saying that melatonin supplements arent anywhere near the dosage that says on the box, sometimes its way lower or higher, but you should try to find a 0.3mg one and hope for the best.
i used to be worried about muh prostitutemoans but when i sleep properly (due to melatonin) i will usually wake up hard, even during the night.

Same negative experiences with melatonin as others already mentioned. I just take a low dose anti-histamine, and it knocks me out, and I feel fine the next morning.
