Too insecure to go to the gym

I'm not obese but currently overweight. What do i do to stop feeling insecure about my own image to actually go to a gym and build my physique?

I don't want to do it for pussy, i just want to get strong and see how much my body can take it.

But i don't want to be looked at by other people (because currently i hate myself)

What do i do IST ?

Just go anon, or find a park with calisthenic bars and exercise there.

      Start doing this at night.
It can be any park, also start cycling. Do it at night when the streets are empty.
Take the nightpill, you'll be a ripped psychopath out of place in the day before you know it.

Cut to lose weight, and in the mean time, just do calisthenics at home. Try the Hybrid Calisthenics routine. It's good for beginners with little equipment, but eventually you're gonna want to move on to a more serious program.

As someone who was mildly anxious but finally bit the bullet and joined a gym a couple months ago, you will realise within 2 minutes of entering that nobody there gives a single shit about you. Just go in when it's quiet and start doing something basic like the treadmill. Try a new machine or exercise each time you go, get a feel for the place. Any anxiety should go away very quickly and hopefully you'll even start looking forward to it.

The last thing anyone in the gym is worried about are other people. If you're fat you're pretty much flying under everyone's radar anyway. Just throw on a hoodie and some sweatpants. headphones, and zone out. Please don't let insecurity rob you of precious gym time anon. You aren't gonna like how you look without going through some uncomfortable changes.

picrel doesn't go to a lot of churches.
there's a big difference between what people are supposed to do and what they actually do.
the only one I've been to that applies that standard is a rural church of no more than 20 parishioners.
I imagine gyms are much the same way. Past certain numbers you're always going to get buttholes in the mix.
Home gym master race by the way.

The church thing was a scandal in the media because it's the fricking church but public schools are a much greater source of abuse statistically, and the child's own home even greater

I have bad social anxiety and it kept me from lifting and even running for a long time. I was too worried about what people would thin’ and if I’d be ridiculed.

It is absurd because the truth is unless you have a reason to stand out no one actually cares about you. Especially at a gym full of overweight DYELs. We all think we’re the main characters and everyone is watching us but that’s just pathological thinking and a consequence of having an ego. No one is going to care or stare at you. Period.

To make it easier you can always prepare ahead of time: come with a plan. Have your set exercises and sets and reps on an app or piece of paper. Study how to do them on YouTube and reading ahead of time. Over-prepare and visualize what you’ll do. Then go in and do it. Sounds ridiculous but flitting around from empty machine to machine and doing random sets and reps will just make you feel more self-conscious and ridiculous. Alternatively start day 1 with a trainer.

These people are trying to make you feel better which is good but the truth is people will judge you there. There are plenty of pictures posted here of gym people who they laugh at.

Getting over it will make you so much stronger. Try your hardest. Come up with ways to ease your anxieties.

We're all on our own road and own journey. Those super fit folks you think are staring at you could just as easily be folks who were 500 pounds a decade ago and are rooting for you.
The important thing is you're on your journey and moving forward. Better than 80% of folks out there.

Half the people in the gym are out of shape middle aged office workers. The other half are gymbros who only give a shit about looking at themselves in the mirror for their pump. None of them care about you. Go to tthe gym.

There’s always people that look better and can lift more weight. Nobody cares. I’ve been lifting weights for 20 years and I’m telling you, it seriously doesn’t matter. Unless you’re a hot girl, nobody is paying attention to you for longer than 2 seconds. I always root for fat people, but that’s just me.

The way to get over the feeling is to go to the gym in spite of it.
It's not that you don't go to the gym because you're insecure, you feel insecure because you are not going to the gym.
You won't ever change feelings without acting first; feelings are mostly responses to what you do or do not do. Even in cases when they're not, the only place you can intervene and change them is by doing something.

i'll be honest I do laugh at fatties when I see them at the gym, because most of them will be gone after 2 weeks at most.

if you actually stick around for longer than that, you will start to gain my respect. my respect is incredibly important, as without it you will not be able to function in life nor get a mortgage or get a car loan.

I threw up my chocolate milkshake on my first day at the gym as a 110 lbs skeleton (5'10). On my first day the place was packed with big guys and hot prostitutes who openly stared at me as I struggled to squat 20 lbs. Now I am doing better. Do someone else remembers my first day? I dont know, it doesnt matter. Start today and what you fear now wont matter at all in 1 month

I assure you that most people won’t think twice about you. A bunch of people will notice you and think to themselves how great it is that you’re there. A handful of people will judge you. The people who judge are literally stupid or are somehow mentally unwell. I’m not exaggerating. Most people will be supportive or neutral. Don’t worry about a few buttholes.

When I started I would only go at night when there were less people & would only do cardio so I could lose weight.

After a year of this I started feeling more comfortable with my weight and started using some of the machines, & now even my friends go with me and we go barbells, etc.

So either go at night and fix your weight or form a group with your friends so you're too busy focusing on each other than to care what other people think.

No one cares. Just start showing up and ignore whatever anxiety you feel and it'll go away with enough repetition. For the first 3 months you should be doing a simple, uncomplicated routine. Because your main exercise is showing up to the gym. Gym is never a question for me now.
