Anyone here ever done a triathlon or doing the holy trinity of swimming-cycling-running? Any stories, experiences, workout schedules etc.? Do you train strength on the side?
I've finally got myself a road bike, which was the only thing holding me back so far, but now I plan to go all out dedicate my life for the cardio gods.

Since 20 I think? It's been on and off, I'm 34 and been doing solely weighted calisthenics (dips, pullups, leg raises) together with swimming and cycling for around the last 6 years or so

I trained for and competed in triathlons for two years after being a swimmer. AMA.

What was your routine? Like what was your weekly schedule and volume? How much time did you spend on each discipline? Did you do strength training as well? In which triathlon category did you compete (I mean at which distance)? Any knee or back pain? Do you take breath at every 3rd stroke? Do you still do something related to triathlons or did you completely give up?
1. Two cycling days, one intervals and one long ride; approximately 80 kms. 3 swimming days with different volumes and intensity throughout the season. 2 running days with bodyweight strength training afterwards. Again volume and intensity changed leading to the important races. Other than the long ride, the training sessions lasted about an hour and a half
2. I did the sprint and supersprint distances
3. No knee or back pain
4. Unless it's a recovery lap after sprints then yes I do
5. I am getting back into it again but with more focus or strength training.
What do you do during the winter?
How different is it to swim in a lake compared to a pool?
Do you have a trisuit for all three sports or do you change or something in between?
1.The same as the summer except I swim in a heated pool during training and use my bike indoors if I need to. Racing I don't mind the cold but some people wear a wetsuit.
2. I've never swam in a lake but I swam in the sea. It feels like the water is more dense. The real issue during the swim though is learning how to navigate the people swimming beside and over you and well as being able to spot the buoys and stay on course.
3. I have a trisuit but I did my first two without one. It's alot more efficient to wear one in my experience as I needed to put on a shirt after the swim.

It baffles me because I do hard labor 12 hours a day and can only do like, a quarter of an ironman at best
Going for a half ironman later this year, done a few sprint/olympic/stuff inbetween.
1: re swimming
1a: Pool/lap swimming is not sufficient preparation for the swim.
1b: You need to be practice sighting so you can swim in a straight line to follow the navigation buoys.
1c: Consider if you need a wetsuit. Check water temps typical of the event, but if it's too cold and you try to balls through it you'll still be shivering on the bike and unable to get the power up.
1d: Aim to swim about twice a week to maintain/develop good form and endurance.
1e: Overall as much open water practice as you can get. People regularly need to get rescued.
2: re strength, I do a little bit. Last long distance race I did my calves were hurting really bad after the bike, so been focusing on them in the gym
3: re bike
3a: if it's a road bike you'll be at a ~2-3 minute disadvantadge from people who use TT bikes
3b: TT bikes are a very different experience to road bikes, get plenty of practice with one before racing with it.
3c: Every time I'm watching the mount line at a race, I play the benny hill theme in my head. Lots of people still slippery from the swim, or just clueless who completely boink getting on their bike and cause massive pileups. Don't be in a rush, just walk over the mount line, one leg over, clip in, kick off, clip in the other. Flying mounts are fricking stupid.
4: re running:
4a: Consider investing in carbon plate shoes, can give improvements of ~10sec/km
4b: When training, do a quick run after a long ride to get practice running after your legs are already fricked. These exercises are called bricks for obvious reasons.
4c: Consider a hat if it's particularly sunny
5: re tri suit:
5a: Yes, get one, they're goated.
5b: Make sure it's got good pockets, like those on road bike jerseys. My last one had a stupid tiny flap pocket that could fit jack shit. Had to jam my gels in the suit itself.
