Uni rugby as an autist

I'm coming into my second year of uni soon and I'd love to do rugby. I know I probably wouldn't be great or necessarily make a team but it looks really fun and would give me an actual use for my strength. The only problem is I'm autistic and not lad-ish at all and I've heard that rugby clubs in uni can be crazy socially with being expected to go on nights out all the time and fricked up initiation rituals.
Anyone have experience with this? I've never played rugby before and I'm 5'8.5 145lbs (I'm gonna bulk soon) and I still seem to be growing in height

i think you should at least try it out - if you are any good and give it your all im sure theyll be accommodating and won't force you to go out and get fricked up every night.

Yeah they have a weekend where you can try out any sports club
Surely I'll be training with other guys or around my skill level as well? So hopefully I won't get raped too bad

good luck im sure it'll go well! im sort of in the same boat. i'm doing a tryout for dance classes next week and also have autism. i'm very worried about holding back the entire class despite it being a beginners group. no one is expecting you to be amazing right off the bat. WAGMI

          Good luck bro
I've always been worried about not being good enough for trying things as well, even when the barrier for entry is very low
The idea of starting something where I don't know exactly what's going to happen scares me

I'm most likely going to do rowing but my heart truly lies with rugby even though I may be unworthy

What do you mean? Surely rugby would be harder than rowing at my height?

Also I'd like to make some friends in the club but I won't get along with the rugby guys much, whereas I feel like rowers would be more chill

Rowing teams have a lot of autists but can still be fun socially

They may never treat you like they treat their normalgay friends but they will respect you if you turn your autist focus to rugby. Don't be bossy when you know something they don't and you try to correct them, and you'll be golden.

Half my team was autists. Rugby attracts a lot of characters with the commonality that they like hitting people and drinking.

Do the rugby. The only regret I have as a fellow autist is not doing sports in HS and uni. If you are good at the game, people will love you. If you are not good at the game and kind, people will love you.

What about considering how light I am? I'll obviously bulk up over time but am I just gonna get raped when I join?

Definitely give it a go. I played rugby from 3 to 18 but had to stop unfortunately due to concussions. It’s a fantastic sport for making friends and building confidence. It might seem a bit daunting at first and some people might make fun of you, but take it in stride and persevere, the rewards will be worth it. It’s a game for all sizes if you’re slightly on the small side there’s the possibility of playing on the wing, scrum half (although there’s a skill threshold in throwing the ball from the ground etc so unlikely you’d fall into this role unless you trained hard and it would take time), flanker, hooker etc. No matter what position you find yourself as long as you work hard, hussle hard to rucks and commit to tackles you’ll gain the respect of your teamates.

    Do the rugby

My biggest regret in college was doing ultimate frisbee with my buddies instead of joining rugby. I'm built for rugby but I wasted it

    Are you in the US?
In bongland or france etc. the standard will probably be higher and without a background in school rugby you won't get much match time
But who cares, you'll still go to training, you'll still play in practice, and with time you will get more and more time on the pitch
    >rugby clubs in uni can be crazy socially with being expected to go on nights out all the time and fricked up initiation rituals
This is true, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try. If you don't like it or it doesn't work out, stop going, who cares

Played four years. Rugby is full of autists and other varieties of weirdos, not exaggerating at all. You’ll be fine. Definitely bulk up though even as a back you’ll get folded at 145.

do it man, you'll be happier with yourself even if you try and it doesn't go too well, you won't wonder about what ifs anymore that way.
