Unless you're training to be Mr.

Unless you're training to be Mr. Olympia any lower body exercises beyond squats and deadlifts (any variation of either being alright) is totally unnecessary. If you're using any kind of leg press machine you are a fricking moron.

He WAS training for mr olympia so of course he did all that stuff. That's Op's point. But back squats will do 85% of the work for 10% of the input. So unless you have some reason to go for the last 15%, then skip it.

No reason. Hack squats are best for building legs. For that matter, machines are better than free weights for every big muscle as far as bodybuilding is concerned. Of course, reddit will tell you otherwise.

My problem with your post is that it seems arbitrary. So lower body training beyond squats and deadlifts is a waste of time. Why are you allowing squats and deadlifts? Why aren't there a waste of time? Seems like a pretty arbitrary cutoff. My intuition is that you think little body training is a waste of time, but you don't want to look like a pussy, so you say squats and deadlifts are all right.
Here's a more simple rule: If you want to get bigger legs, do the exercises that are required to get there. If you don't want bigger legs, then just maintain them with a couple of exercises.

      Anonymous

Just doing squats and deadlifts will get you big legs. They won't be exceptional legs without further training but you'll still mog 99% of people exclusively doing those 2 exercises as your lower body routine. With that little upfront cost of course you should do them, but doing anymore is a waste as it takes away from the aesthetically much more important upper body.

        Anonymous

You're arguing from a place of input versus output and that's rational, nothing wrong with that. But here's the thing, the hamstring is very easily trained, you could do just a couple of sets of leg curls to failure and have sufficiently trained your hamstrings from a knee flexion standpoint. On top of that, calf raises are an exercise where you can do a tremendous amount of muscular damage with very few sets if you know how to do them: Pausing at the bottom for a legit couple of seconds, focusing on the weighted stretch, and pushing to failure. I only do a single set for calves because like you, I'm thinking about the inputs versus outputs, but I'm saying you can be oriented around that way of thinking, and still do more than just squats and deadlifts because that extra work on top of it isn't very demanding. If you have a high volume mindset, like you have to do every exercise for five sets, and you're not interested in maximizing your leg development, I can see why you would only do squats and deadlifts.

You’re moronic there are a lot of supplemental exercises that help you run and jog more efficiently. Those same exercises also help you in most sports as well with shock absorption or encouraging proper biomechanics and stability of the ankle and foot. Literally fricking moronic. OP probably works at a desk or is super young and inexperienced.
