If I'm lifting and running I can have a big ass bowl that is roughly 1000 calories and consists of one and a half cup of oats, 2 cups of 2% milk, 1 tbsp of honey and 40g of raisins and still be able to eat 2 other decent sized meals throughout the day.
They're also a staple ingredient for shakes.

Oats is alright poverty food. Oat, milk, cinnamon and spoonful of butter. You can get 30g of carbs, some fats and 10-15g of protein for like 20-30 cents. Basically the cost of 200-300ml milk and the butter. 500g oats from lidl cost like 40 cents so its basically free.

Easy: they are complex carbs (vs simple carbs like sugar) which makes their glycemic load lower, and they are cheap as hell. I bought a costco sized steel-cut oats pack like a year ago, eat oats regularly for breakfast, and I'm just now running out. Cents per meal. They are also versatile as hell. I add chia seeds, cinnamon, cut up banana, and a teaspoon of honey regularly. If I don't have time to cook in the AM, I just make overnight oats; takes 5 minutes to make breakfast for the week: Oats, milk, vanilla extract, blueberries, chia seeds, almonds. Line up 4 mason jars, dump the ingredients in, throw in fridge, now I have 4 breakfasts, grab one each morning with a spoon.
Oats are just super versatile, cheap, and are the type of carbs you want in your diet (complex carbs).
