The pic isn't related to my walking habits, but it was the only meme I could find relating to walking. Personally, I do walk around a lot of forests and parks. I couldn't walk for 3+ hours in a noisy metropolitan city tho.

All the trails are crowded around me and sometimes I want to just casually walk rather than hike, like a casual loop with little to no incline, but there are none like that nearby.

the area I live has only a handful of sidewalks and neighborhoods to walk in since I'm in a flyover state.
Any advice on how to spice things up? lately the walks have become so boring and repetitive that I am starting to lack the motivation to even go

Humans were hunter-gathereres for most of their history so it's a WAY to lose weight, but your body is literally designed to walk prey to death and burn minimal calories in doing so.

You can burn more calories in a 30 minute intensive bike ride than 12 hours of walking

      Anonymous

12 hours of walking is about 50,000-60,000 steps, if youre like me (192cm, 97kg), that will burn a good 4500-5000 calories. Nice try moron, walking is the way. Christ is king.

        Anonymous

Sorry, meant to say one's tdee would be 4500-5000 cal. It'll still burn a solid 2000-2500 calories though

        Christ Is Lord

        186cm, 97kgs here
        i disagree on your estimates
10k steps is like 400, maybe 500, definitely not more than 600 Caalories (itd be 600 for a 300lb untrained fat ass)
12 hours should be 72k, like 2900 Calories (though id like to see someone do that,my pb is like 42k)
but thank you based christ poster

Walking =/= persistence hunting pace. You have to jog after the animal or it will outrun you. The whole point is that humans can sweat to keep cool during the jog but animals can't shed heat as quickly as us.

          Anonymous

yeah.. real hunters societies always use poison instead of relying on the arrow head penetration. Each arrow is like a hypodermic needle.. all they need to do is to follow the animal until it collapses
Also the achilles tendon is a adaptation for persistence hunting/running. Acts like a organic spring storing the energy of the previos step to be release on the next one

            >persistence hunting/running.
One of these things is not like the other. Our elastic achilles tendon is arguably more important for the energy saved when walking and sprinting,L.

      wrong
20k steps is like 800 calories for most, 3 hours 20min of walking, 2-2.5 hours on a bicycle for most, 90 ish min on an elliptical id guess

      https://i.imgur.com/e1N09wr.jpg

Is walking 20,000 steps per day effective to losing weight and becoming lean?

yeah, but it can get very hard on your feet, get really bad foot pain and ankle pain, not to mention the sheer amount of time it takes.
takes too much time, just bike or do whatever instead, steps are meant to be gotten passively
that being said i like walking and id walk much more if i had some nice natural scenery.

      >You can burn more calories in a 30 minute intensive bike ride than 12 hours of walking
      12 hours of walking = 2000-2600 calories
      30 minutes of cycling = 400-600 calories

      >your body is literally designed to walk prey to death
I hate this meme so much it's unreal. Persistence hunting is just a theory. Some people may do it, but it's the least effective form of hunting that exists.

Humans in nature hunt by using their brain. They may develop tools to fish or kill land animals at a distance. They may use traps to catch animals.
They may use strategy, teamwork and cooperation to corner or encircle animals that would otherwise outrun them.
They may ambush their prey. Which by the way is what bow hunters still do today. Follow tracks, climb up a tree, and just wait for animals to come by and shoot them.

The idea that persistence hunting was very prevalent in the past is a baseless assumption used to justify modern exercise (cardio, running) as something "natural".

      >Humans were hunter-gathereres for most of their history so it's a WAY to lose weight, but your body is literally designed to walk prey to death and burn minimal calories in doing so.
Complete speculation. The adaptations humans developed during our switch from arboreal ancestors to grassy-plains dwelling bipeds can be explained by a multitude of theories. The persistence hunting theory requires many assumptions. Sweaty naked apes that have relatively good stamina / speed trade off is well-explained as an adaptation to allow us to scavenge on the plains when we saw the vultures circling a kill. Our unique ability to throw meant we could rain a painful and frightening shower of rocks on the predators that made the kill and scare them off of their kill.
Like meme persistence hunting, similar methods to this are still used today. Lions don't frick with a group of humans that know how to intimidate them away from their kill

This method has the advantage of not being incredibly niche and specific to the climate and topography of the land as persistence hunting is.

Just go on a calorie deficit and do OMAD; then no need for any walking. I lost 60 pounds last year by OMAD and calorie deficit. Crazy thing is that it only took me like 3 months to drop 60 pounds because I lose weight quickly. Also I did extended fasts as well, fasted for 12 days last year

Now imagine doing that with walking. There are other benefits to walking than just weight loss.

Or, or , or, you could've gone on a 8-12k a step daily walking regimen, split your tdee-500kcal daily eating regimen into three square meals, and not done a womanly crash diet-esque severe weight loss. How's your cardiovascular health fatty? Feeling fatigued for doing a b***h starvation diet? Theres no need for that level of suffering, and we both know you'll regain the weight knowing your habits.

Walking that much will have good health benefits, but your body is so efficient at walking that it won't cut into your energy usage all that much. If weight loss is your goal, you'll have much more success at counting calories and reducing the amount you eat.

  21. 4 months ago
    Anonymous

Yes but if you add a weighted backpack it's even better. I started adding 15 lbs to my daily walks with my dog and I've noticed my calves and traps are starting to get a bit fatigued by the 45 min to 1 hour mark.

Walk to the shops or work with an audio book and you get:

Entirely depends on how/what you eat on the side.

A lot of train lines have cycle/walking paths along them. If you walk down one for a few hours you start to notice how each suburb is a microcosm, like a biome in minecraft or a zone in wow. Walk further, for longer, over months... and it all changes.

People in cars have no idea. They just see driveways and carparks.

Walking burns around the same calories as jogging by distance, but jogging burns more by time since you are obviously faster.
Walking uses more fat as energy source (in peecent), doesn't raise cortisol, doesn't raise insulin, doesn't make you as hungry. So yes, walking is good for fat loss.
