Weighted vest - yes or no?

I am a newbie doing bodyweight workouts. My Youtube recommendations are full of weighted vest videos, hard to tell if it is snake oil shills or if it really is beneficial. What would you say? Exercises: push ups, chin ups, lunges, burpees for example.
How is it on the spine/joints? I have scoliosis.

Ooooh oh yeah, the fitness scene is absolutely FULL of shills. Some are very obvious, but this vest isn't, at least not to me. Come on bro. Would doing burpees with these be good in any way or will they just frick up my joints.

Not really, the weight is distributed/doesn't move as much in a vest. That being said doing fricking burpees with a Weighted vest is dumb as shit. Do you hate your joints?

Thanks for the warning. Even if I do not jump? I don't do it anyway, cause my knees are fricked up and I get out of breath my burpee is just
        >go down

          Anonymous

Just do burpees normally or look up 8 count body builders if you want to do extra. If you want weight, go hiking with a pack, thats bad for your knees to but at least it's not dropping to the ground and putting lots of intense short stress on your joints. If your knees are bad though, do literally anything else

        Anonymous

idk about burpees lol i just meant for pullups and pushups and such.

          Anonymous

For pull-ups, just use a dip belt. That sits across your hips so it won't wreck your shoulders. Bonus: you can use it for weighted dips too.

For push ups: probably just don't do weighted push-ups. There are tons of other unweighted push-up variations you can do that build chest without adding weight that will overstress you joints. Medicine ball push-ups, decline push-ups, ring push-ups... make sure you're going to failure and you will see gains, even without weight. Add bench press and cables to your routine too and there's literally no reason you'd need to do weighted push ups, ever.

I am a sample size of one so take this with a grain of salt, but I tried weighted push ups one day by throwing 10lbs into my backpack, and the next day my lower back hurt way more than it ever has after a workout. That's enough for me to avoid them from now on.

If you want to be lean and thin, look into beginner calisthenics routines(if there are any calisthenics bros ITT they can maybe recommend some). Pull ups, dips, all variations of push ups and air squats can give great results. In order to lean out properly you will need to track your food intake pretty well and eat at maintenance or just slightly above(<250Cal) and involve some form of cardio 2-3 times a week(I do 7+ miles of rucking on mountain trails). After a few months of gains you can start looking to cut and really lean out to good results.

They are good but make sure you get adjustable ones, the ones that have little pocket with tiny metal bars or bags of sand to adjust the weight.
Most vest out there have one set weight and some are adjustable but you have to get extra plates separately to increase the weight and from a specific brand so it fits the one you bought and this obviously is a scheme to make you spend more money on vest wich is a waste of time, only adjustable ones are worth the investment but then again those also tend to be cheaper so they might not be as durable or as comfortable so is still a rip off but for what it does an adjustable weight vest is acceptable.

What exactly is the point of a weighted vest? Just because an activity is harder doesn’t mean it’s superior for your fitness.

Totally useless item to have. Want to lose weight? Cardio and subtract calories. Want to gain muscle? Do actual hypertrophy training, Not just “well it was hard to do so I must be making gains”.

If you bench heavier weights you make strength gains. If you do pushups and add a vest you increase resistance.

I run in my plate carrier, which is superior to weighted vests. I'm not trying to be pedantic but you will definitely be better off with a proper plate carrier and properly curved plates than with a vest that uses metal shot bags. Overall plate carriers are good to train with if you don't overdo it. For context I compete in the Tactical Games and that competition requires you to do all kinds of bullshit in a plate carrier, so I have to train to not get my ass completely kicked out there.

Not OP but was thinking of getting a weighted vest to train for a race. That probably wouldnt be terrible for my joints right? Like say I was running with an extra 20lbs, that would just be the equivalent of someone running the same distance who weighs 20lbs more than I do. No problem. Then when its race day I take the weights off like Goku and get super fast.

For the price of that weighted vest you could buy a vest, level 3 steel plates, and some spall sleeves, just buy the actual armor and work out in that.
I used to just run and do pull ups with an alice pack when I was younger anyways, no point to get a vest.

  19. 4 months ago

A hiking pack would be better. You can put sand bags in it and do push ups with your chest all the way to the deck and overload on pull ups more easily. Plus a hiking pack will double as, y’know, a hiking pack.

Backpacks throw off your center of gravity much more than a best would. You could carry more weight with less issue with the vest.

I bought a weighted vest years ago and the only thing I really use it for is rucking. I don't do bodyweight exercises because I am not a chink and why would I use a vest when I own barbells and dumbbells for things like squats, lunges, etc.
The one I have now is 40lbs which is almost nothing and if I was buying one now I'd get one much heavier because I can easily walk for miles with 40lbs and its not hard at all anymore.

One thing weighted vests are legit good for, is if you are a recovering fatty who actually lost a lot of weight recently, the added weight helps counterbalancing the hunger signaling.
Another decent use for them is uphill sprints and other HIIT stuff.
For muscle gains though? utter meme bullshittery, praying on idiots by selling them an easy method "just buy these meme vest and frick around, you will gain magical muscles so it's worth overpaying for this shit trust me bro", sounds too good to be true because it is. Just buy a cheap ass plastic adjustable dumbbell using plastic weights filled with sand, a fraction of the price and you will figure out what you like/want more of while reaping some noob gains along the way.
Bodyweight is a scam in general because yes you require "nothing buy your body"... but buy gym rings, a pullup bar, a resistance band, etc etc. It's a big scam and only with a solid experience and non-ass form will it do you any good.
As a noob buying an olympic barbell and weights, while technically the best investment you can make, will be lost on your lack of knowledge and technique. So yeah, avoid meme, buy a cheap shit chinese dumbbell and a pullup bar, figure shit out, and then decide what to do next.

      Anonymous

Bodyweight isn't a scam if strength and MOBILITY are your goal. Calisthenics is about improving your flexibility and strength throughout a full range of motion. Weightlifting turns you into a slow cow.

        Anonymous

Mobility yeah 100% agree, but as a complete noob? it's straight up bad advice. Better have him frick around with a dumbbell doing standing bench presses than getting zero gains doing a meme 3 sets of 50 convict conditioning memester Can you gain muscle and train your mind-muscle connection with calisthenics only zero equipment? probably but it's stupid as shit self-sabotage for the sake of self-sabotaging because you think it's "hardcore".
Besides, he'd still need to deadlift even with only calisthenics, and maybe he doesn't want to have to do pistol squats or shrimp squats for decent legs.
He can always go for calisthenics after a couple months of toying with dumbbells that cost him a whole 30USD, it's literally the most middle-ground approach.

They really only work for 3 exercises a beginner could do. Pullups, squats and dips. They make balance harder and overload less concise with supported movments like pushups and row variations and are borderline useless on ab and shoulder work since a handstand pushup will always be sufficient resistence. Also calisthenics has rather strenuous movments that are hard on connective tissue (if they are externally loaded) so they increase recovery demands which means training frequency has to go down which is the only thing calisthenics really has going for it. So I would say they're not worth it unless you're fairly advanced and doing ring stuff. Even then only if they're cheaper than dumbells. Integrating dumbell training into calisthenics is a lot easier than trying to find a routine that works long term with weighted calisthenics.

You don't need weighted vests as a calisthenics beginner. You can buy one once you can do the hardest variations of the exercises you want to do and have no way to progress further. Most likely you will never reach this point.
