It's simply the nature of evolution for some species to grow larger in order to more successfully compete for resources, while smaller animals fill their old ecological niches. It's simply a form of specialization. However, they become more vulnerable to changes in the environment, like all strongly specialized species, so they also go extinct more easily.
I cannot believe that nobody has posted the actual reason yet, the limiting factor for the size of terrestrial life, including plants as well as animals is the amount of oxygen. Back in those days there was more oxygen in the atmosphere.

It has to do with oxygen content in the air. Incidentally, this is what got me into bonsai— I keep a bunch of tropical trees in my room, year round. Just got a new grow light too so I can get even bigger along with my trees.

Some evidence suggests there was slightly less to around the same amount of oxygen during the dinosaur periods as there is now, and that it was when it reached the current level that dinosaurs flourished.
