This is why I don't like bouldering. Yes it's usually only a few feet of the ground, but there's nothing to stop you if you frick up like that poor dude.

You learn how to fall properly, and you don't try and do leap of faith moves unless it's on a wall and you have somebody belaying.
        You're not competing.

I think it's pretty cool. And it's really good training if your hobbies include going in the woods and actually climbing stuff.

Whether you actually like it or not, don't judge it based on these videos. What you are seeing is the rock climbing version of ego lifting. The guy has no clue how to climb, and has no clue how to fall, which is why such a small fall fricked him up so bad.
Just for the reference, I've had falls as big as this guy's, and I was perfectly fine afterwards. I did however fall on purpose a shitload of times before, just so I could learn how to do it properly out of reflex.

How do you fall correctly while bouldering?
Since my teenage years of skateboarding and judo I learned how to fall safely, but it's probably pretty different when you fall from height

dont fall, moron. Be humble and loose the ego climbing mentality. Know what you can do.
Unless you are a fricking gymnast / profesionall climber just fricking climb down a litlle untill you feel its a safe height for a drop. Its that easy.
Drop on both feet and imimdately go to squat..roll if you have to.

what do you think are the chances of that happening to you? Most sports have inherent risks, are you just gonna stay at home and play videogames? Or is that too risky as well because you might get carpal tunnel?

when I was in my mid 20s I was more interested in climbing than lifting, but I would usually lift a little bit after I got my bouldering done. If that's what it takes to get you to the gym then go for it, but it's more hobby oriented than sport/fitness oriented. You can also make friends and a lot of chicks do it so there's other benefits

People on fit always cope when rock climbing is mentioned because they are too fat for a proper bodyweight sport. Getting physically strong with a BMI of 20 is something a powershitter can only dream of.

You do need to substitute with some extra exercise though. Bench press (or at least a bunch of pushups) will help you avoid golfers elbow for instance. Check out antagonist training.

Very few good climbers are physically strong, and the ones who are are genetic freaks, and most certainly have a BMI above 20.

Like every physical activity it favors some body types over others. It’s just as much a cope the other way around when some 5’6” 100 pound guy is like “well at least I can climb stuff”. It’s like a 300 pound powershitter bragging about his body weight bench press. Climbing does have an advantage in that the chicks who do it have to be skinny.

i have tried to get into it for like 6 motnhs but in the end i think considering it your main "lifting" activity is pointless, its more of a fun gimmick.

I got into it a few months back
    Fun
Limiter is finger strength, after a few climbs in a session I find that they just don't recover enough, so I'll have to rest a few mins just to attempt one hard section, get through it then rest again and repeat
Went bouldering for first time recently on a date, she's massively into it. Shredded my hands but it was fun and I'm seeing her again
Probably keeps you lean pretty well, especially in bouldering there's a lot of emphasis on total body tension, you have to hold a precise position with your core and glutes, it's like a plank I think.
Fun pastime anyway. Can be considered active recovery so long as you don't prioritise any lifts that are grip related, use straps on deadlift etc.

I’ve never casually talked to so many women before than at a bouldering gym. Something about not being a hippie think makes you stand out a bit.

It’s a little difficult mixing in with strength training, but if you go a few times a month you can still get better.

I hated the social part of bouldering gyms. Being around upper middle class beatniks, bald manlets giving you advice you didn't ask for, the little cliques hogging routes, the army of horny men obviously here for chasing little buns in legging, the humble bragging. Frick I'm bitter, there was clearly nice people too.

        Anonymous

I can empathize. I normally go with a buddy so it’s more likely we’ll talk to people we want to than the other way around.

There is also the consideration that I’m in Colorado, so there isn’t much of a cliche concentration at any single gym.

Oldgay climber here with 20+ years experience. Climbing gyms are basically glorified social clubs for adults that also host birthday parties for children. Climbing outdoors has always been legit but any climbing area that has a "scene" has gotten so crowded that they are more like climbing gyms than actual outdoor activity areas. The insane rise in the number of "climbers" in the last couple of decades has come mainly with an influx women and children. The children tend not to belong to those women because female climbers tend to be antinatalist blue haired freaks with tattoos of ruth bader ginsberg. One of my favorite climbing areas used to have route names that are considered offensive ("lesbian knife fight" comes to mind) that have been edited out of new editions of climbing guides and replaced with pc alternatives that ate usually created by weak jawed feminist men. I could go on about the degeneration of rock climbing since the 90s but you get the picture. I hope that rock climbing is a fad, and I hope it dies.

I actually used to want to get into rock climbing, but then I saw the price tag for shit like Everest and realized it's insanely middle class. The climbers even have the sherpas doing so much for them that it actually defeats the point of people syaing they climbed a mountain imo.
I also hated images and videos I saw on the internet of the amount of trash people left behind. I was interested in mountain climbing partially because I had visions of unspoilt nature and beautiful views. Instead you see trash and waiting lines because christ forbid people copy camping and leave the area as you found it for others to enjoy.

That's mountaineering which is much different than just rock climbing.

        Mountain climbing =/= rock climbing
Although there is some overlap. Mount Everest might be the most atypical mountain to climb in the world due to the endless hordes of idiots trying to do the "hardest mountain climb in the world." A few years ago I climbed a remote peak in Colorado with a summit register that went back to the 80s. It was one small piece of paper with maybe a dozen entries. We had to cross several rivers and do some technical rock climbing to get to the top. It was a wild adventure and it had virtually nothing in common with the rampant moronation that happens at mount Everest.
