Useless advice. That's a bit like telling a heroin addict to stop taking heroin once in a while. You need COMPLETE SEVERANCE from the harmful stimuli of modern media, for a prolonged period of time (weeks or months) in order for the brain to heal.

im actually kind of excited for the future, seems like its going to be extremely chaotic and having 12%bf while not having a tiktok rotted brain should be enough for me to be successful with little to no effort

Easier said than done, but you're basically correct. The level of literacy that was taken for granted when graduating high-school circa 1990-2010 will be considered genius/university professor territory in a few decades. Simply by reading (relevant and useful) books and staying away from the Internet, vidya, porn and TV you are giving yourself a massive advantage over the overwhelming majority of mankind. But who am I kidding...I'm posting on a basket weaving forum, and so are you...

my kids are going to be superhuman freaks because of my good parenting and genetics

Other people here have mentioned this recently, but it seems likely that the class divides in society are only going to widen. The plebes are leaving their kids' brains to rot on Instagram and Tik-tok, while aspirational and upper class parents are giving their kids perfect upbringings, Montessori education, dozens of extracurricular activities, adequate socializing with other kids, etc. The underclass is becoming increasingly dysfunctional while the élite will gradually become übermenschen, and this isn't even taking into account the effects of cutting edge medical technology and drugs which only the élite will have access to.

I actually predict the most talented people in the coming future will be the one who can go through multiple ideas quickly and multitask. Think about it for a second, we have AI that can draw pictures for us and every day other applications like that are getting developed more and more. Even as its been for the past 10 years, being a walking encyclopedia or calculator has already useless from the internet and smartphones.
The kind of people that will be using tech optimally going forward are not going to be the slow and hard workers that practiced regurgitating a process.

Seriously though, I just want to make myself clear: As AI tools and helpers develop further, your so called "non-rotted" brain is going to be too slow to keep up with real talents.

Zoomers are the first generation in recorded history to have declined in understanding of technology and ability to interact with it. They struggle to use even a computer file system gui, something designed specifically to make it as easy to use as possible. People don't understand the technology they are using and are having diminished agency over it. You're genuinely ignorant if you believe the declining mental health of the world is advantageous to those affected. This is not some boomer "those darn youngins" shit, society is genuinely sliding back in some areas despite the trends we are accustomed to.

Reminds me, I was watching a Dragnet episode, some old time copaganda. In it I saw one of the lectures to crooks the show was famous for, it was old Greatest generation fogeys talking to Boomer kids, Brought up how they expect everything instantly, "turn a knob, get entertainment, turn a dial for communication, turn a key and you're driving there."
I see how things have gotten as bad as they have. one study shows a canadian town cut off from tv untill the 70's scored better than their genetically and culturally similar countrymen in all intellectual and emotional measures.

        >I actually predict the most talented people in the coming future will be the one who can go through multiple ideas quickly and multitask
Multitasking is a lie and kids these days are having even less retention of what they were doing when they swap tasks

how do i fix it? "just get off the phone" isn't as easy as it sounds after years of conditioning

Eliminate distractions, read books, spend prolonged amounts of time on singular tasks

Force yourself to go and take a walk and look at shit, be lost in your thoughts for a little, less is more. You'll lapse back into it afterwards but gradually push yourself into realizing you don't need nor want the constant overindulgence.

I've been making an effort to stop distracting myself so often, I got out for a walk yesterday (without staring at my phone) and suddenly came up with a solution to a problem I've been working on, its been a while since that happened.

You literally just have to put it down and walk away. Do you just do what your body does impulsively for everything or just your phone?

Walk into another room and stare at the wall and reengage your own thoughts for 5 minutes. Keep doing this everyday. Add more time. Write down your thoughts on paper.

You don't need to be connected to the hive mind at all times.

Can't get off your phone? Uninstall instagram, facebook, clash of clans, whatever it is that distracts you. Just uninstall it.
Can't stop gaming? Uninstall your games, uninstall steam, sell your gaming computer and pick up a laptop that is capable of doing whatever you need it to do and not much else.
It's insane how easy it can be to beat addictions when you just remove the trigger. I wanted to quit gaming 6 months ago, I didn't just say "ok I'll stop playing games", I went through my computer and uninstalled every single game, not even minecraft got a pass. I thought it would be tough, but it's easy as frick, I have ZERO temptation to play games now and I love being able to spend my free time doing almost ANYTHING else since basically anything is more productive and healthy than gaming. But I can guarantee you if I left steam on my computer it wouldn't have gone this way. It takes change to make change basically, don't expect anything to go well for you if you don't do something to put you in the right direction.

As two facts, the brain usually manages to accommodate itself to the current level of excitement, and it usually craves for slightly more.
In our modern times, we are always able to give it slightly more, and so the brain keeps asking for more and more until your life is falling apart due to being overstimulated.
Sadly, fixing this makes you extremely uncomfortable, as your brain demands what it's used to.

Old problem that’s getting worse. Arguably the 24 hour news cycle and cable were forerunners. “Amusing Ourselves to Death” was written about that.

The problem: You have trained your brain to be a skimming machine for years.
The solution: Train your brain to read.
    >but it’s le hard
Literally the fatty cope, here on IST. You spent years turning your body into a tub of lard or a skimming shallow smoothbrain. You want the solution to fix in minutes what you spent YEARS fricking up. You want a reward incentive and applause for getting back to a normal state. You “need” more incentives and carrots to motivate you.
Frick you. Change or don’t. It’s your call. You are the architect of your own misery, so choose to build a way out.

Good book. Reading is a great habit and a great way to get away from your phone/screens.

Also a decent filter socially. People who read books are interesting to talk to, non-readers think you're smart if you talk about something you read in a book. Just don't over do it.

  25. 11 months ago

Very simple. Less gadgets and gizmos, less pharma drugs, less recreational drugs, read more (fiction novels are the world's greatest tools for increasing attention span if you remove the things that kill it). I've been doing it for a couple of weeks semi daily against the 500 lvl bots on chess .com and I can notice that when my focus gets snapped I can come back to it more easily.

I guess this could actually be done with literally anything you do or play but I think chess is a better more streamlined environment given that zero amount of luck is involved in it.

For me, I'm currently quitting all kind of social media and my plan is quitting IST and similar forums and discord as well. My biggest issue is filling up the void that comes with it, I'm already working out but I need to find something else to do with my time. I have some projects I never got started with that I really want to do, so I need to set up a plan to actually get them done.
If you just look at it as an addiction, it's sort of the same with decreasing exposure over a period of time and filling in with something that's more healthy. In the end this stimulation addiction isn't different from any other kind of addiction.
Like we've said here for a long time, an important thing of finally making it is graduating IST. That's one of the big reasons all the great guys here left, and only the shit people are left. Glory days were back in 2011 and 2012, but the people who made this place great left. Or died in Zyzz's case I guess.

The cure is having something to do.
TV, movies, and single player video games are fricking boring. It's not that you lack focus, they might as well be chores except you don't really get anything done.

The big problem is a lack of things to do that actually benefit you. People used to have things to do by default. Improve your house, mow the lawn, work the garden, fix your car, make dinner, etc. Even when you had leisure time, you had somewhere to do it other than a 20x10 living room. Renting is such a huge catalyst of the modern plight that owning property for the purpose of renting it to others should unironically be illegal.

I should have been more clear. I count online games as single player. Playing by yourself is boring.
Some couch multiplayer with friends can be a good time
