yeah it was split, i think it was called the spartan club or something. i wasn't super social in split but everyone i chatted to was friendly to me as an american guy. the british tourists were the only time i ever felt mildly threatened, i'll definitely come back soon.
Avoid the big park during late night hours and early morning hours and the run down building at the end of the beach and you probably won't run into any problems. Those are the designated junkie and crime areas. Also all the big booty b***hes go to the "olimpijski centar/marjan fitness" and all the legal ones are at the one in Gripe.

Yes, the big hill west from the palace, it's called "Marjan". It's where the best beaches are that the locals frequent, and going around it makes for a nice if long walk. I have a few friends that like to go for a run there during summer, and they told me that the people they see there early in the morning are almost exclusively junkies returning home after a night of doing drugs in the forest. Even the locals don't like going around the hill at night for that reason.
It's completely safe during the day though but shady stuff happens there late in the night. I still recommend biking or walking around it, the view is really nice and it's generally very quiet there.
