I always have a feeling all the famous calisthenics guys are roiding so they will grow anyway, or got muscles conventionally and then switched to calisthenics to attract more people.

If your goal is looks you should do what maximizes looks, and it isn't calisthenics

it's pretty good, the downside is you have to get pretty creative as far as exercise variations progression

    example
    >kneeling pushups
    >pushups
    >diamond pushups
    >clapping pushups
    >ring pushups
    >archer pushups

    you get the idea

also your legs WILL lag behind just because your available exercises are so limited and there's such a cap on available resistance

yeah this is why most people sell it on low barrier of entry are scammers. Actually exerting yourself and figuring out leverages with your particular proportions is way harder than just putting objective plates on a bar. It's also weird that very skinny guys can do advanced stuff like front planche. But then again gymnasts are ripped so idk.

      >there's such a cap on available resistance
leg calisthenics are shit cos they're already moving all your bodyweight and they're very good at it. calf raise variations are great but it's easy to do them wrong and frick your Achilles.
apparently bodyweight squats and lunges are good because it's adding the resistance of the water, so every movement is a push exercise, but it's easier to just swim and not be the weirdo squatting in the shallows during senior lanes.

      Not true for legs.

Harop leg curls to nordic leg curls for lower posterior chain, and reverse hypers to reverse hyper holds to reverse hyper banded holds for same. You could do nordic leg curls one legged to double intensity too.

For back it's variations of back extensions.

Front of legs is squats, sissy squats, wall squats, then one legged versions of same.

I imagine a barre routine would be best for hip & knee stabilizers, as well as more advanced gymnastics. Lunges too maybe, or sideways lunges.

One arm progressions for everything and you need 1/4 of the weight you'd otherwise need
    pistol squats included

If you're broke, try to get your hands on 60kgs
    Then, you'll want to do
    pike push ups
    dips
And lots of wide grip pull ups with an arch
    One hand rows
For legs, nordic curls and pistol squat
Add weight as often as possible

Calisthenics won't cut it. You can get some cardio out of them, but you will never gain much muscle. You need to go to the gym.

I matched years of calisthenics progress in like 2 months lifting actual weights. I only wish I'd gone sooner.

The only piece of equipment you need is a pull up bar

All muscles can be targeted hard with bodyweights
Ofc some weight on the squats wouldn't hurt

In a perfect world you should be doing both. Weighted calisthenics with a calorie surplus can get you pretty big, but it is basically weight lifting anyway.

Look up how gymnasts do their strength training. You can gain a lot of muscle but it's not very time-efficient, it does however give them freaky strength and connective tissue development that most guys in the gym lack.
Most time-efficient way is probably HIT a la Mike Mentzer or Dorian Yates.

Stupid to limit yourself to only calisthenics unless you are poor or naturally talented and use it to get a moronic superiority complex over guys who are bigger than you but can’t pretend like they’re walking on air while doing pull-ups

I used calisthenics to start my fitness journey back during Covid. I was very very lean. Then I got a gym membership and I started very weak for free weights, but quickly adapted and got a great body the more size and strength I put on.

Imo, it’s a great place to start. Will you get big? Not at all. You’ll lean out very well. But as someone else said. You’ll have to eventually get creative and do variations in order to progress. If ottermode is what you’re going for, it’ll do the trick.

Your muscles do not know if you are working them outside or inside. Your muscles dont know if you're doing pull ups or lat pulldown machine. Calisthenics is just a poorer or "stupider" way to work your muscles. Does it work? Yes. Is it the best way to work out your muscles? No.

With calisthenics you increase intensity by switching to a variation of the exercise that is harder, and your form must be perfect before you get that far otherwise you'll frick your shit up.

Look at beginner -> Intermediate gymnastics to get an idea.

Calisthenics are honestly great, besides all the strength and mobility, you can also get great aesthetics, especially for the upper body, lower body is harder tho, requires a ton of repetitions and variations of the squat

I lifted weights for years, but I found that pursuing calisthenics goals made my training more focused and fulfilling. I’m leaner than I have ever been, and in certain areas, I’m stronger than I have ever been. When you go down this path, you sacrifice some general strength, in pursuit of extremely high levels of specific strength for particular movements.

Is the trade off worth it? Depends how much you enjoy pursuing the goals. I personally love it. I’m already married, so I don’t need to “looks max” with bigger muscles everywhere. I can just do shit I enjoy while staying in aesthetically great shape (but not being “peak” aesthetic shape).

Honestly, it’s about what you enjoy. If lifting for power or strength get you into the gym week after week, and year after year and it keeps you healthy, then there’s really no reason to switch. Calisthenics is for people who have done that awhile and are looking to switch it up to pursue very specific goals, or just poor gays I suppose.

I went with it so I didn't need to buy anything other than a pull up bar and because I cba going to a gym. Im about 2 months in and progress is slow but steady. Granted I'm going into this we no prior exercise for many many years and I'm exercising on a caloric deficit (currently 210lbs 5ft 10)
