Because there's a difference between failing on your 5th rep and on your 20th rep.

NTA. Total volume changes. More volume with adequately heavy weight without exceeding the recovery capabilities of the individual leads to more hypertrophy every time. If you can do a 3pl8 squat and fail at 5 reps that's 1,575lb (716kg) of volume. The same guy could use 215lb (97.5kg) and fail at 20 reps which would be 4,300lb (1954.5kg) of volume. The 20 rep squats when taken to failure will always lead to more hypertrophy. The downside is that when you work muscles that big to the limit the oxygen debt leads to a lot of lactate accumulation and it burns like a son of a b***h. That's why it's not done often. Masochists only for that style of training

Completely wrong. Only the number of sets matter. 3x30 at 50 kg gives the same hypertrophy as 3x10 at 70 kg or even 3x5 at 85 kg (assuming 100 kg is your 1RM).

Because I'm running DDP and all I need to do is add 1 rep to 1 set

You don't count reps because you think there is no point.
    I don't count reps because I can't count.
    We are not the same.

In a perfect world, there isn't. But you are not perfect and you don't live in a perfect world. Our brains have an incredible ability to lie to ourselves. With roids you get some leeway, for example Jay Cutler never had a program and he never counted reps. He won Mr. Olympia 4 times.

But the chances are that you are not going to be able to do it. If you counted and tracked your reps, you would work harder and push for progressive overload. If you dont count em, your failure is likely not your "true" failure, it's just a point where you guesswork and quit because it feels tough. Even though if you knew you did 8 last week, this time you would have had 9 in you. But because you didnt even count reps you failed at 7 already.

This seems to be every gym rats routine. It's odd how the internet is the worst possible place to go for lifting advice.

you can make the gym like a video game. record the reps and weight you did and try to beat it next session that way you'll always know what to push for. It's so you can push past failure

    >count reps
    >know you have been at 8 reps for a long time now
    >be at 8th rep again
    >literally use every single drop of glycogen and sheer will left it you to attempt the 9th
    >make it
    >gains

    >don't count reps
    >always go to failure, happy with yourself
    >in reality stuck at 8 with no knowledge of it so no motivation to push yourself to the very limit

Its interesting to track how much have you improved or if you are regressing. Id say count how many reps it takes you to go to failure and try focusing on beating that number every time.
Its essencially the same, but you get more information out of the deal that results on decision making such as "should i take a couple of days off" or "am i really training to failure or im just a pussy for no reason"
