dont sweat it just get on a real program and stick with it. a novice can do basically anything and make gains as long as its consistent and progressively overloaded. It's much much better to start off too easy than to start off too light, since any linear progression novice program would have you setting world records within 3 years of hitting the progression every week. If you start with a 70lb squat instead of 90 you're behind only like 3 weeks, but you're guaranteed to not burn out instantly.

I tried "hypertrophy" for a year and all that happened was I got smaller and weaker. I don't see how you look at a weight training program who's goal is to make you smaller and weaker and say it's the "correct" way to train. He used to be ripped too, on the same shit he just bulked too hard.
"Hypertrophy" guys have no idea what they're talking about.
