While I was changing machines, an old lady who I'd been seeing for a few months stopped me randomly just to tell me that I looked great. She could tell I've been losing weight (I have) and saw my clothes were looking looser than when she first saw me.
Old people are always the best motivators since they're not afraid to say whatever in on their mind. So if you're legitimately doing good, they will come up and tell you you're doing good.

Most people are npcs obsessed with their social status and how they look to society, and they worry if they're associated with someone low-status that it'll drag them down too.
Confidence is weird. You gain confidence when being treated well, which makes you confident and causes other people to treat you well. Attractive people are born being treated well so they naturally gain confidence. In that way, unattractive people are expected to be submissive too, so when they see someone unattractive being confident, it annoys them in this strange "how dare he" manner.
