Which of the following 10 cognitive distortions do you exhibit that impact your gains?

Which of the following 10 cognitive distortions do you exhibit that impact your gains?

How can you help prevent yourself from making this distortion in the future?

>1. All or Nothing Thinking
You think about yourself or the world in black-or-white, all-or-nothing categories. Shades of gray do not exist.

>2. Overgeneralization
You think about a negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat or a positive event as a never-ending pattern of success.

>3. Mental Filter
You think exclusively about your shortcomings and ignore your positive qualities and accomplishments. Or, you dwell on the positives and overlook the negatives.

>4. Discounting the Facts
You tell yourself that negative or positive facts don’t count, so as to maintain a universally negative or positive self-image.

>5. Jump to Conclusions
You jump to conclusions that aren’t warranted by the facts. There are two common forms that are called Mind-Reading and Fortune-Telling.
• Mind Reading: you make assumptions about how other people are thinking and feeling.
• Fortune Telling: you make dogmatic negative or positive predictions about the future.

    >6. Magnification and Minimization.
You blow things out of proportion or shrink their importance inappropriately. This is also called the “binocular trick” because it’s like looking through the ends of a pair of binoculars, so things either look much bigger, or much smaller, than they are in reality.

    >7. Emotional Reasoning.
You reason from how you feel. In point of fact, your feelings result from your thoughts, and not from what’s actually happening. If your thoughts are distorted, your feelings will be as misleading as the grotesque images you see in curved fun-house mirrors.

    >8. Should Statements.
You make yourself (or others) miserable with “shoulds,” “musts” or”ought to’s.” Hidden Shoulds are sometimes implied by negative thoughts.
    • Self-Directed Shoulds: cause feelings of guilt, shame, depression, and worthlessness.
    • Other-Directed Shoulds: trigger feelings of anger and relationship problems
    • World-Directed Shoulds: cause feelings of frustration and entitlement.

    >9. Labeling.
You label yourself or others instead. Labeling is actually an extreme form of overgeneralization, because you see your entire self or essence as defective and globally bad, or superior.

    >10. Blame. You find fault with yourself (Self-Blame) or others (Other Blame).

That is IST in a nutshell. Finding faults in everything. New game release? IST is about hating it, IST hating new show movie, and so on.

So basically IST as a whole is suffering from these cognitive distortions by a lot. And if you browse this place habitually you are being conditioned to do the same.

TL;DR IST is making you mentally ill. If you browse it you are mental let and NGMI, its over.

Every single person on IST is extremely guilty of the Mind Reader bias because they have grown up consuming unfounded claims on IST and "red pill" blogs that women are secretly conspiring to test their genetic quality at every turn

      Anonymous

      >women are secretly conspiring to test their genetic quality at every turn
they do that openly and they are not conspiring because women are in a fierce competition for the best possible genes.

        Anonymous

        >women are in a fierce competition for the best possible genes.
This is the "women know the best for humanity" fallacy. Women don't know anything about good genes which is why men controlled who women partnered with for thousands of years. When left to their own devices women are horrible at choosing mates especially since they're so swayed by propaganda. When trailer trash, ghetto dwellers and felons have a higher fertility than regular upstanding people you know something's wrong.

          >This is the "women know the best for humanity" fallacy.
Its not, because that's not what he said. Women choose the best possible genes for maximizing health and chances of success for strictly their own child, which means the most jacked and the most socially dominant. Thats not the same as selecting for producing a whole generation of high IQ high-agreeability STEM majors, because nobody outside of your head has ever claimed that women select for that.

Women can't pick the most jacked and socially dominant accurately

Success at what though? There are plenty of strong "socially dominant" addict felons in prison or on welfare but they get way more play than many self sufficient civil guys who run their own business or work some prestigious job like engineering. You're telling me women are so moronic that they think shacking up with some ostracized noncommittal violent bum will be better for her offspring than a smart guy that can provide for himself and stay out of trouble?

Most of these biases have some advantages but must be recognized as such and adopted voluntarily.
    >1. All or Nothing Thinking
Good for motivation and not half assing work outs or other tasks. Should only be adopted while doing things, going back to "did my best, time to move on" when finished.
    >2. Overgeneralization
Similar. Everything you do should be done to the very best of your ability, otherwise you're extremely mediocre and unworthy. Should be adopted only while doing tasks.
    >3. Mental Filter
Frustration can lead to working extra hard when you're struggling with both discipline and results.
    >4. Discounting the Facts
It's easy to fall in the opposite bias and shrug off your mediocrity. Recognizing this bias can help recognizing the other face.
    >5. Jump to Conclusions
    Useless and should be avoided.
    >6. Magnification and Minimization.
Similar to the first two ones. Thinking it's the end of the world if you fail this set can be a strong motivator.
    >7. Emotional Reasoning.
    Useless, should be avoided.
    >8. Should Statements.
    Same
    >9. Labeling.
Put good labels on yourself and never suffer from self esteem. Not good when you're stable, useful when you're insecure.
    >10. Blame
    Useless

Okay so lets diagnose IST by drawing out patterns from repeated post content

    >>1. All or Nothing Thinking
    >tfw short, its over
    >tfw balding, its over
    >tfw negative canthal tilt, its over

    >>2. Overgeneralization
    >You think about a negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat or a positive event as a never-ending pattern of success.
Very similar to number one. I cannot remember any event thinking atm. Maybe "i missed my bench PR today i'll always be weak ;("

    >>3. Mental Filter
    >You think exclusively about your shortcomings and ignore your positive qualities and accomplishments. Or, you dwell on the positives and overlook the negatives.
This again is a lot like number one, "i am short, i am ugly, i dont got abs, no jaw, my nose, my this my durr"

    >4. Discounting the Facts
Looksim'ish will always discount other facts then facial attractiveness.

    >5. Jump to Conclusions
    >There are two common forms that are called Mind-Reading and Fortune-Telling.
    >• Mind Reading: you make assumptions about how other people are thinking and feeling.
IST in general is extremely heavy on this behavior, and they always think that you are "seething", people will tell them self that you are always seething no matter what.

    >• Fortune Telling: you make dogmatic negative or positive predictions about the future.
"i will never get a gf"

      1. Sex
      2. Delusional self confidence has gotten me more in life than any practical skills I have. I am bad at my job but get paid a good amount because I delusionally believed I had earned and deserved raises. I have sex with women because I delusionally believe I am one of the most attractive men on the planet. I got good grades because I delusionally believed I am one of the smartest men in the world. I make gains in the gym because of my delusional belief that I have great muscle building genetics. I will NEVER confront reality. I will NEVER come to terms with my shortcomings. I will NEVER doubt myself. And there isn't shit you can do about it. If we met IRL I would hold absolute faith in my ability to kick your ass no matter what you look like, even though I have not trained combat sports in years.

All or nothing thinking is brutal in the fitness and exercise world, e.g. if I miss a single session/overeat one day I might as well quit. I'm not moronic enough to necessarily think like that, but I've noticed that I'm at high risk for falling off the wagon after I miss a few sessions for travel or something

This thread is pretty based because OP pulled this from established literature on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

CBT is one of the most effective treatments we have against depression, clinically speaking. It often performs better than medication. Medication + CBT seems to be the best combination we have in psychiatry.

Every human could challenge themselves on these biases though. Emotional regulation is so important in achieving goals it is unreal.
