Why Are Legs So Huge?

Why are the leg muscles so huge? I can likely bench somewhere between 255 and 275, but I can likely squat 315, yet my legs are way bigger. I know the legs also have to lift your body when you squat, but it seems like the legs are way larger for the strength they have.

    Women store fat in their legs. The muscle underneath all the fat is not that large. It's the same with obese powerlifters who think they have big legs when it's mostly fat. They've never had low bodyfat so they have no idea of how small their muscles are. Watch the smallest weightclasses and you'll see how little muscle you actually need to move massive weights.

      The bigger powerlifters are also enhanced, and steroids actually result in your muscles storing way more glycogen, nitrogen, and water. Powerlifters love to take tons of dbol before a meet, and dbol really makes you swell up. The muscles are actually bigger. It's just that this additional size doesn't directly correlate to additional strength. I also suspect that there are more things going on. For example, it's commonly believed that neural drive is the biggest limiting factor. The muscle is capable of lifting more weight, but the nervous system just isn't powerful enough to send the required signaling. There's also the possibility that the muscle fibers are also wasting energy pushing against each other as they contract, resulting in bigger muscles being less efficient. Even if you could solve the issue of neural drive, the tendons wouldn't allow you to lift so much weight.

      No. The 2nd largest are either the deltoids or triceps depending on who you look at. The muscle groups in the back are smaller than triceps and deltoids. They only look big because they are superficial muscles with a large surface area.

      possibly yes. the strength difference in the lower body between the sexes is minimal compared to strength difference in the upper body. so natty women with built legs don't look sus to me. it's when they have visibly developed androgen receptor dense muscle like delts and traps alarm bells go off

    Because legs grow more in response to higher rep ranges which you are likely doing. Whereas Upper body muscle size is much more closely correlated to strength with related movements. Plus by default, the muscles in the thigh and the glutes are the largest muscles in the human body.

    I’m no expert, but I think that most muscles in the legs are slow twitch, and can’t put out the same force as quickly as fast twitch muscles like biceps. This is better for endurance over an extended time, but to exert the same amount of strength for a single lift, more slow twitch fibers are needed to make up for the slowness.
    It’s like comparing a diesel engine to a gasoline engine. A gas engine produces more power from a smaller package, but runs out of fuel more quickly, while a diesel engine has to be bigger for the same horsepower, but is more fuel efficient and will run for longer.
