Why are normies so against working out to improve how you look?

I'm a fatso, been working out for 3 months, in trade school I was chatting with my new classmates, hobbies came up and I said "I know it's hard to tell looking at me but I like going to the gym." and everyone started talking about how you shouldn't be going to the gym to change how you look or to be more attractive to others because that's a waste of time and you should only work out to be healthier. Why?

      Yeah I'm a funny guy.

They feel insecure about their looks because their bodies are skinnyfat or just fat, because they're sedentary and don't go to the gym to compensate for their lack of activity

I mean I do too, that's why I started working out.

Right, and that's good. But they say that you shouldn't go to the gym to specifically improve your looks because that would imply that they, who don't go to the gym, are unattractive. That's why they can only admit that it would improve their health, and can't admit that it would improve their looks.

you don’t go to the gym to be healthy? it’s what I do. I’m jacked. Having health as your motivation means you won’t do moronic things like roids or chasing high one rep maxes

I mean that's a benefit I enjoy, but I mainly go there to look better. I won't be using roids before I turn 40-50 unless I turn out to have naturally low test or something.

      >I mean I do too, that's why I started working out.

Would it imply that they were ugly? I think it would just imply that they could be more attractive if they worked out.

        > Would it imply that they were ugly? I think it would just imply that they could be more attractive if they worked out.
Regardless, it's something they don't like to think about. It's for the same reason that most people who are overweight sometimes tell themselves that it's impossible to lose weight or that it's a waste of time. They don't like to think of the fact that they have room to improve themselves.

My original motivation to go to the gym was because I started experiencing back and knee pain, so at first I just focused on core and leg exercises, but I continued because I liked the feeling of being strong and I liked how I looked having muscles.

That didn't happen, try to come up with better b8.

It's not even that crazy of a story. There's no reason to doubt it.

It did happen though, it wasn't like a big thing it just caught me off guard that they jumped to that, most people don't really give a shit about health they only pretend to when it's convenient.
        [...]
No one said anything about competition though.

And you just admitted it's fake.

Then you've probably never been in that situation. It's just small talk for the purpose of being polite and affirming a neutral relationship without any serious meaning behind it
"You don't need to lose any weight you look fine"
"You should only go to the gym to be healthier and feel good"
These are meaningless expressions that are said to people who don't know each other very well. OP was talking to his new classmates, meaning they likely don't relate to him very well and they definitely don't understand how important it is to him to lose weight and how bad being a fat frick makes him feel.

I don't think that is what it was cause they were pretty passionate about their opinion that working out should only be done for health or to compete, also none of them work out so they might have felt like they needed to give an excuse why they don't when I brought it up.

I don't know if normies are against working out to improve yourself. Everyone I see complain about normies is a stupid crazy gay butthole.

Well my classmates were against it, I don't know if they count as normies I guess.

The implication is that a person is using sex as a motivator when they shouldn't. And to an extent they're right because sex isn't worth putting so much effort into in the first place. Now if someone is getting in shape to have a romantic relationship then it's different, because ideally a partner would want their partner to be healthy so to live a long time.
Ofc if you ask normies they'll give a generic response of it being "shallow" or "egotistical" because they've never thought hard about it.

I don't think anyone's main motivation for working out is sex, because you can get sex even as a fat slob pretty easily, but I don't think that striving to be attractive is shallow or dumb, because it does make you feel more comfortable in your skin to know you are attractive.

Is it small talk if we are actually trying to get to know each other better though? It's not necessarily useless information to find out what their hobbies are, regardless it turned into a weird philosophical thing about how you shouldn't try to improve your looks just to appeal to other people.

        > Would it imply that they were ugly? I think it would just imply that they could be more attractive if they worked out.

I guess that makes sense, I used to think about how I could 100% improve my life if I wasn't a lazy frick and it would make me feel pathetic, your only option is to actually stop being lazy imo.

when i was fat i once made a joke about it to my friend's gf, just trying to "not take myself seriously" as the normies say. she kinda laughed and got quiet.

later when i got in better shape i realized what a pathetic joke it was and she only pity laughed because i'd made it awkward by bringing up my fatness. self-deprecating jokes are the worst. no i'm not triggered at all why do you ask

Normies are weird. To give you an example I have a normie friend that's been on the same 4 day brosplit (arms are spread through 3 other days) for the past 5 years. Not only he looks like a dyel, he's been getting fat as well. When I tell him he's doing something wrong he goes "nah bro, I don't wanna get big, I just need to slim down first, it's fine." It's mind boggling tbh.

Well what they are saying isnt wrong but they are doing it because they have bucket crab mentality. Its called that because its been observed thst when you have a bucket of crabs, and one tries to escape, the others will pull it down.

The fact you are trying to better themselves makes them feel cognitive paim because they know, deep down, that they should too.

Now back to the health comment. The truth is thaf you should be primarily concerned with the health aspects over aesthetics; the exceptiom being is if you are prepping for an actual body building competition.

The reason being is that that in normal circumstances aesthetics follows health. If you focus on getting strong, eating well and being consistent you will get healthier and your aesthetics will improve. The aesthetics are simply the fruit of a healthy lifestyle.

Fun fact, regular lifting with barbells has been shown to decrease your likelyhood of brain degenerative disease like dementia and it results in a reduction fo all cause mortality and the elderly who lift enjoy far higher quality of life.

What’s wild to me about that comic is he could’ve made a perfectly fine point about being comfortable in your own skin, but instead immediately veered off to just shit on fit people and claim that they’re boring and passionless, like every other sour-grapes fat frick I know.

If other people are doing it then they have to do it too but they don't wanna do it so you shouldn't do it
    That's how normies work
