Why did having huge traps go in and out of fashion so quickly?
People used to obsess over traps in the mid 2010s (I’ve been lifting since the 2000s) and I don’t remember people caring about specifically getting huuuge traps until the mid 2010s and then it sort of just faded away quickly
Why did this pop up and why did it die out so fast?
i lold when prince andrew said he started lifting because he wanted big traps. it sounded so absurd but apparently that was a real thing among guys back then.

I think what happened is it actually worked, but people realized having big traps doesn’t look aesthetic, especially when you don’t have huge deltoids, but also because it can cause sleeping issues if you have bit upper traps
I would also bet that lots of guys got kicked out of their gym doing rackpulls, or they just hurt their lower back doing heavy shrugs

if you're hobby bodybuilding, big traps only work with broad shoulders + low trap insertions, otherwise they make you look worse

basically if your traps are attached high on your neck, growing them will give you a sloppy look, making you look narrower, but if they're attached low to your neck, you will still have that wide look even when they pop out

no, it's related to androgen receptor density, not high test, you can have high test and shitty response to androgens, plenty of people who still look like shit after roids, but you're correct that delts/traps are usually most androgenic and respond well to gear

Traps and neck actually respond quite well to training for most people and have a low risk of injury and the muscles actually change your silhouette even when you have your clothes on, but sure there's a risk you look goofy.

Having huge traps is directly correlated by having high test. It's why roiders ALWAYS have enormous traps. Even with no training, you should as a high test man have pronounced traps.
My guess is test levels have been dropping with every generation. Since zoomers have less test than generations prior, the appeal of huge traps goes down.
