Not only do most gym goers not use safety bars, most don't even know how
You are supposed to set them like 1mm below the bottom of your squat when you only use the bar, that way when you are weighed down you'll catch the weight on the bars instead of dying
But people don't bother spending the 3 minutes at the beginning of the exercise to figure out what level to put the safeties at
What's worse, most will deliberately walk backwards until they're out of range of the safeties (if using a half rack)

WAYS TO SURVIVE
1) do not have a spotter behind you - he can't lift the bar from there anyway, have spotters on either side or not at all
2) dump the bar off your back and spring yourself forward
3) use safeties at just below your bottom bar height
The safest way to squat is to know how to dump the bar, simple as that

As a natty I’ve survived +10 fails at 180kg. Most were just me sitting down and wondering wtf to do and then dump it backwards, the rest I just put it on the safeties. Theres a reason people want you to squat ATG. When you fail on your way up, you can also just sit down atg and think.
There was one time I was squatting outside in the rain and I fell forwards and had to frog jump while throwing the bar backwards. Was the closest to death I’ve experienced working out.
