- when you say "unlimited calories," does that mean that you're actually exceeding TDEE by a fair amount, or is it more of a way of saying that you're in an energy deficit but FEEL like you're eating as much as you like (owing to the satiety of the meals)?
If you're eating unlimited calories there's no weight loss goal. You just let your body regulate itself. On keto you will probably gain muscle while losing fat so weight isn't necessarily representative of body composition changes. You also lose water weight at the start.
Track body composition by measuring waist size if that interests you.
Unlimited calories could result in increased consumption measured by calories but the metabolic boost from keto plus energy being discarded (you breathe and urinate out ketones) means you will lose body fat. There's also a limit on how much fat your gut absorbs because you can only produce a limited amount of bile. The increased satiety may also result in a decrease in consumption measured with calories. It depends on your personal hormonal situation.
The great thing about keto is you don't have to worry about any of this. Your body just takes care of itself when you feed it unlimited dietary fat and unlimited protein while avoiding carbs.
If an anorexic person starts keto they will gain muscle, body fat, bone density, and weight. It's just a healing diet which restores you to where you naturally should be.
