Suits basically pull an optical illusion that reverses your expectations- fat guys and skinny guys look good in them, but people with broad shoulders and chests and small waists look comical, like they have childish or midget proportions.

      Anonymous

Not exactly, being lean with some muscle looks very good in a suit and in general. If you're big enough that people notice and comment about your arms but not so big that you bulge out of off the rack suits, that's basically the peak of what normies find attractive. After that you're just an autistic meat head to the vast population.

Right on. Matching pant/jacket suits look gawdy 95% of the time, no matter who is wearing them, especially if they're brighter colors or have distinctive patterns.

I did like the fit that Pereira had going on at the last UFC fights. I can't find a pic of it, but he was rocking his jacket with a chain and without an undershirt, which would be silly except he had the swagger to pull it off and was walking towards a title fight so it's whatever.

It's crazy that he used to fight at 145lb. He has the wingspan of a 6'2 man, and legs longer than 6'0 Paulo Costa's. Dudes like Chad Mendes and Marcus Brimage looked like little midgets in there with him, and now the Ultimate Weight Cutting Championship has even surpassed him, as the biggest featherweights now are 6ft+ and cutting from over 170.

True, but that's why there's a manletweight division. Conor looked like a crackhead weighing in at 145, and his reach is bigger than an average man's. Battering manlets with an eight inch reach advantage is a different thing to fighting men your own size like he eventually did.

The problem is that is a really stupid fit for his build. Dude looks like he tried to put on his son's formal wear. At the minimum his sleeves and pant legs need to be let out, he looks ready to rip the armpits open just by reaching for something. Slim fit suits may be popular right now but it's a terrible choice here.

“Clothing” is a relative term. In suits yeah big guys are going to look silly but in a yukata/kimono their breadth and power is projected without looking like they’re stuffed into a mold.

European formal fashion evolved from military uniforms, particularly the modern suit which has its origins in the British Army.
After the ostentatious rococo fashion of the regency period, the modern lounge jacket evolved from the battle dress tunic, and the trousers are parade breeches. It's fundamentally designed to accentuate slim bodies because it has its origins in what is basically professional activewear.
A lot of suit features and styling come from the military as well. 6 belt loops are standard (originally these would be clipped into the jacket and a belt worn on the outside), flat shoulder seams to prevent bandoliers digging in, internal pockets to keep notebooks, mapping, and timekeeping tools, and a split hem to prevent the jacket ripping on horseback and provide ventilation. The tradition of not doing up the jacket bottom button comes from increasing waist flexibility when reloading muzzle-fed muskets/rifles from a standing position.
Obvs I got carried away but basically suits have always been intended for slim people.

You guys are using terrible examples to try to extract some principle that doesn't exist.

It is absolutely true that, for the most part, you'll need to get suits custom made or heavily tailored if you weight lift. That said, it's not THAT weird.

Some tips that I've learned over time:
    >For the purposes of finding a good fit, custom suits >>>> suit separates that you get tailored >>>> off the rack suits that you get tailored.
    >Don't go too skinny on the pants. It throws off the balance of the suit and can look overly tight, even though it might not be. A nice and gentle taper is all you need. Skinny pants also make you look like a shitty arab perfume salesman "influencer"
    >Actually, for that matter, ditto on the jacket. If you see characteristic pulling on the front button when the suit jacket is closed, you've fucked up. A suit is not meant to show muscular definition, so don't try.
    >Normal lapels are generally smart, as narrow lapels make your shoulders look like a wasteland of fabric. Similarly, the tie shouldn't be too skinny.
    >Most "stretch" fabrics are kinda nice, but generally don't help much, and can look ugly in certain circumstances. It doesn't hurt to have that sort of material for chinos (to pair with a sportcoat), but don't rely on it for a full suit.
    >If you can swing it, roped shoulders and a double vent help create a nicer silhouette. The roped shoulders prevent wider shoulders from looking too droopy, and the double vent helps avoid a barrel-like appearance from the back.

The ideal body for a suit is stick thin. You have to accept it.
